I'm not sure about the 3rd generation Rams, but our 2002 3500 ETH/DEE dually (Cummins HO/NV5600 6-speed manual) was the last truck I owned where the manual transmission had a higher GCWR (21,500 lbs with 4.10 gears) than the automatic (18,000 lbs, IIRC).

Don't know much about Dodge trucks pre-2010...never owned my first one until 2010, but even then, the Cummins, as you stated was de-rated in HP & TQ with the manual but also, at that time and since, has had a lower tow rating then the 68RFE automatic and the Aisin automatic.
