I think the ratings dropped for the manuals when Ram switched from the cast-iron cased NV5600 (New Venture went out of business in the economic downturn) to the aluminum cased G56, a Mercedes truck transmission back when Daimler owned Chrysler.
That coincided pretty well with the introduction of the 68RFE 6-speed automatic on January 1, 2007 which replaced the 4-speed 48RE automatic - the Aisin AS68RC was only available in the cab & chassis trucks back then as it offered PTO capabilities that the 68RFE doesn't have. The bottom right hand corner is that the manual transmission got weaker and the automatic transmission got stronger - even more so with the Aisin AS69RC that's available in the pickups today.
