I think the ratings dropped for the manuals when Ram switched from the cast-iron cased NV5600 (New Venture went out of business in the economic downturn) to the aluminum cased G56, a Mercedes truck transmission back when Daimler owned Chrysler.
The G56 manual is rated for 660 foot pounds torque; the Aisan rated for at least 865 foot pounds. It is the manual that has the lower tow rating.
With a pin weight and add to that the hitch weight around 3000 pounds, the 2500 will likely be at or just under max axle weight considering all the other stuff, tools, people, etc, carried in the truck. Another vote for a 3500.
