5th wheel brake wiring

I've just finished swapping my electric drum to disc brakes. 2010 Silverado2500 HD Duramax, 33'-0 Crossroads Cruiser. My question is where do I hook up the blue wire from the electric-hydraulic actuator (I've mounted in front storage) as it appears the only blue wire I find in the compartment seem to be coming from the breakaway switch on the hitch. Does this 18 ga. blue wire control normal braking ? I really need help. Thanks, Marty
  • Thanks all for your help. Looking forward to trying out these new brakes. Marty
  • I made the same conversion awhile back on my Cougar and found that Keystone had the electric brakes magnets connected by a pair of wires in a sheath, one was ground and one was the positive wire tied to the the blue wire of the 7 wire connector.

I cut that wire right at the axles and pulled it back in the underbelly and used it to connect to the pump (one ground and one to the blue controller wire on the pump) in the side storage compartment. This saved me from running a new set of wires directly from the 7 pin to the pump.

Didn't have to play with breakaway switch wiring.

Unplug the breakaway switch pin when your doing the bleeding, easy way to turn on the pump.

  • the brake away switch sends 12v from the trailer battery to the same wire that comes from the truck trailer brake controller. To answer your question, yes that is the same wire.
  • The breakaway switch is just that, a switch. It activates the brakes when the pin in the switch is pulled. There should be a hot wire coming from the trailer battery going to one side of the switch and a wire going to the brake wires coming off the other side of the switch. Having a hot wire coming from the truck would do no good as the switch is activated when the truck "breaks away."
  • Something just occurred to me. The blue wire for my truck wiring is for brakes. The only blue wire in the hitch goes to the breakaway switch and then back through the wiring loom into the front compartment on the 5th wheel. Am I then to assume that the blue wire in the compartment controls normal brake operation as well as breakaway ?
  • I have the Titan BrakeRite Actuator & Takonsha Prodigy P3 brake controller. I do not have a harness for the actuator. I have the wiring details but cannot find a 18 ga. blue wire in the compartment to hook to the actuator, except for the blue breakaway wire. The other 4 wires on the actuator are no problem. I don't think I should have to run another wire from the hitch.
  • I guess first. we should know what brand of actuator you have. I went out and looked at mine (TITAN) and found the blue wire goes into their harness which gets plugged into their moduel and it then is no longer blue. You must have a wiring diagram, or call the co. I had to because it wound not work without an additional part (not compatiable with the built in brake controller) You will love the stopping power of those brakes. A wise choice.
  • depending on who's controller you have on the pump you should have a brown wire that goes to your brake wires in the pigtail
  • I still need to know where to find a blue wire to attach to the actuator. Or do I have to run another wire from the hitch to the compartment ? Assuming the blue wire in the compartment is for breakaway only, and not to control normal braking as well.
  • it goes to the breakaway. You should be able to fish the wire up to the junctionbox.

You should have a ground two positives onegoesto the batt one goes to the trailer wiring a ground and the breakaway switch
