Now I understand why I see old RVs with retrofitted S&B window units.

As noted, it is a bit much for the average backyard/driveway repairman.

The saddle valves clamp around the line and have a single o-ring seal against the copper line. If the line is slightest bit out of round, it will leak.

A saddle valve is a quickie patch job and I would not consider it a repair.

I have done HVAC work for a long time and a couple things to check first is your filter clean and is your condenser clean?? Those 2 things being clean go a long way to colder air. And you can most certainly can service them and add freon as mentioned you need to have a piercing valve to add freon and now a days the valves you install you can solder on. But I would say its to much for the average back yard guy. But very much servicable.

The guy that fixed mine. Which was a Freon leak did it about 45 minutes and it worked perfectly for as long as I kept the rig. Now maybe he didn't do it right but it sure worked.

There are two ways to recharge a hermetic unit. The cheap way is to use a saddle valve and squirt in some refrigerant. The problem with saddle valves is they will leak and you will add more refrigerant.

The proper way is to use a saddle valve to open the system and pull the refrigerant out. The system needs to be leak checked and repaired. To properly repair a leak, the systems needs to be purged with nitrogen while the repair is being soldered and Schrader valves soldered in on the compressor inlet and the compressor outlet. Next, the system is vacuum dehydrated to get the nitrogen and any moisture out and checked to see that the leak is fixed under a vacuum. The system is then recharged with refrigerant.

Depending on the capabilities of the technician, this can take 2 to 4 hours.

So if you have an A/C tech buddy, he can do it for you.

I had mine serviced while on the road. A leak was found and recharged all for a 60 dollar fee. This was a mobile RV repair man, I got his number of the bulletin board. This also was like 14 years ago. It worked perfectly after that. I have a local guy here in town and he would also fix a leak for me. No big deal actually.

What is the BTU, how big is the trailer, how hot is it outside, and are you parked in the sun?
Might be better to spend the money installing a second air conditioner.
