B&W Companion slider stuck installing

I can't believe it. I just got my new Companion slider unboxed and went to set it in place with the turnover ball hitch and it failed to seat all the way. Now I can't get it back out.
Man this thing is heavy too. I plan to go back to the shop that ordered it for me and see if they can pull it back out with the forklift. I guess I am learning a hard lesson on cleaning the socket out good and lubing it before installing.
  • Could you hitch up to the 5er and let the landing gear lift it up for you?
  • I had that problem once when I first bought mine. This is what I done to fix it forever. They are binding up when the post goes into your socket, the powder coat is just to thick to allow it to drop in. I sanded the hitch post that goes intro the socket with a DA and some 600 paper. After sanding off the powder coat, spray the post with slip plate (graphite spray paint) it will drop in easy and allow you to remove it as well.
  • When I bought the now gone '06 F350, mine jammed as well from crud. A few whacks with a hammer (a piece of 2x4 between that hammer and the pin) and a pry bar got it out. You will need an eye bolt (1/2") in the bolt hole in the pin. You might try from underneath the truck. If I recall, you can actually look up and see the opening. A 2-3 foot long piece of rebar should work as a long drift (pull the latch pin out first). My '11 truck luckily has the 5er option along with the proper B&W base and my previous hitch head:B
  • First, make sure you take off the crossbar to lighten the load. Next, as Helipilot says, check the locking pin to be sure it's not slipped and is jamming up the works. You got it =in=... I've only had one occasion where I had a problem, and it was with the TO Ball itself. I'd had some sand and dirt in the bed and it worked its way down around the ball, and I couldn't get it out. Some WD-40, liberally applied, and a bit of =careful= persuasion with a long screwdriver and small wood block, got it out.

  • Check your spring loaded locking pin under the bed. It may have released and is holding the hitch retainer in place
