companion or Draw-Tite Hide-A-Goose 5th Wheel Hitch Adapter

Has anyone used the Draw-Tite Hide-A-Goose 5th Wheel Hitch Adapter? I purchased a used truck which already has the pop-up GN hitch installed. It is a 3" round shaft with the 2 5/16" ball. Bought my first 5th wheel, 24ft coachman, start small. Purchased the pop-up GN adapter. Having problems mounting since there is no place to bolt the upper unit to the 5th wheel plate. Instructions say you can weld it to it, but I don't want to permanently do that.

Also I didn't seem to enjoy the ride. Does that Draw-Tite Hide-A-Goose 5th Wheel Hitch Adapter work with the pop-up brand gooseneck? I know the pop-up makes an accessory shaft which is round to square, so I think you can use the B&W companion.

Final question, how important is side to side on a 5th wheel hitch. The trailer came with one, but it is the original from 1997 and has little or no side to side pivot. I could just install that, but it would require bolting into frame, and then the rails are leftover, which I don't want when I put in my v-box salter for snow plow season.

Suggestions and options would be appreciated.

thanks!
  • The side to side tipping of 5ver hitch made it easier to hitch back up again. I had the 20k Reese 5ver hitch (awesome hitch) with rails so I could convert back to a goose neck for my horse trailer

Goose necks: A lot of posts about them on the forum. They stress out 5vers since 5vers aren't designed for goose neck hitches. Some 5ver manufactures will void warranty if you use goose neck hitch. Normally people with stock or horse trailers have them and only adapt to 5ver because it is convenient to pull both types with their goose neck hitch. Look around and you will see damage on front of 5vers caused by being adapted to a goose neck hitch.
  • talked with pop-up hitches out of chanute, ks. They make an adapter that fits the B&W companion hitch. Trying to get a hold of a dealer that has excess stock because of a cancelled order. There are 2 companions in IL area for $500. Trying to get a hold of one of those. Using the camper for next 3 weekends.
  • GN type adapters are popular with folks that use them and not so popular with those that don't.

As mentioned the adapter can be hard on 5er frame at the hitch attach area. However some 5er mfg have addressed the issue and even offer them as a option. Do your home work there.

Our older hitches didn't pivot side to side and were a bitzh to get hooked when camped on uneven sites that had the truck and trailer on different angles. I've had to block/ramp the trucks wheels on one side to get hooked. The 4 way pivot is a must for me. If you RV or camp on leveled sites its not that big of a issue.
