Considering TPMS for my fiver

I'm thinking about buying a TPMS system for my toy hauler. I don't want to jump into it blindly though, because the systems aren't cheap and I'll have to pay a few extra bucks to have my rubber valve stems replaced first.

So my questions are...

  1. How secure are the sensors? How often do they get stolen?
  2. Do they only work when you're moving or can you read your cold tire pressure before you depart?
  3. What's the best brand?
  4. I have a long bed truck and my fifth wheel is 44.5" long. Will the signal reach that far or do I need something to boost the signal?

  • I also have the TST TPMS. I love it! Great peace of mind.
I went 2 years with no alarms. Then twice in a period of 2 months, the alarm went off and I was able to stop before the tire caused any damage.
Yes, you can check the pressure when sitting still, such as in the morning.
With my sensors, you need a special tool to remove them. So a thief could not get them...or it would be very difficult.
TST has a repeater which solves the distance issue.
    Cheers,
  • With your length you'll probably be best served by having a repeater. I have the TST TPMS and am mostly happy with it. It has one drawback and that is the length of time it takes for the monitor to notify you that you've lost contact with a sensor. It can take up to an hour to notify you that it has lost contact. Basically that means you are unaware that you have no protection for that tire/s.

I've personally had that happen to me, and it was indeed about 55 minutes before it alerted me to a lost sensor connection. So if you go with the TST you'd be wise to get the repeater to hopefully forestall the problem.

I would not get the flow-through sensors since they are a real PIA to use when adding air. They are very restrictive and adding as little as 5 psi can take a substantial time. Not worth it IMO.
  • I tried the TPMS system sold by Discount Tire when I put the new Maxis tires on. Lasted about a year. Waste of money IMHO.
  • I use the TST on the truck and trailer. I have no issues with needing the repeater. The sensors require a tool to remove them, which deters theft. I'm sure a determined thief could get them off. The tire sensors are on all the time. To save batteries when I won't be using the trailer for a while, like winter storage, if you loosen the sensor, or remove it, it shuts them off.

As noted above, I turn the receiver on when doing the last minute packing and hooking up, and they are up and running before leaving.

I wouldn't think of towing without them now.

I use the TST507 system with flow-through sensors on both the truck and 5th wheel. Our 5th wheel, perhaps due to a combination of length and placement of the display unit low on the console, does require the repeater to get reliable signals from the 5th wheel's tires.

While some may prefer the non-flow-through sensors, if I were to use them, I'd have to dismount the outer dually tires to add air to the inner dually tires.

I used braided extensions to surface my dually stems out by the center cap

I use the non-flow thru on the dually. as the flow thrus wont fit on the front tires. I pulled the security covers from the non-flow thru sensors as well to be able to mount them on the front wheels. (2012 Ford F350)

I'm already good to go on the truck. My Dodge has TPMS already. I just need the sensors for the six trailer tires.

there are a few resellers that can reduce the price.. TST will even patch them!

I have dually, long bed and 40 ft FW. no issues. (they have an extender if needed, I don't need one).

I haven't heard of anyone losing sensors.. the crowd we hang out with are pretty decent all around

they work sitting still. take maybe 5 minutes to register..

hook up, turn on monitor, do your packing and sensors will be active.

they also allow you to turn off the trailer sensors on the monitor (press two keys) when you are away from the trailer to avoid alarms and reduce the scan cycle time.

note, you have to protect yourself from dumb workers..

I had the tires balanced last year while on a trip.

the worker rolled two tires, stem side together and sheered off both sensors. they paid, but I was without sensors for the rest of the trip.
