i remember the Dodge T-rex 6x6 having a transfer case attacked to the first rear drive axle. they had the case angled so the output to the rear was over the axle.
Back in the olden' days a friend built a "beach buggy" out of scrap stuff, big old flat bed with two rear axles and old baloon tires. it was 6 WD. He used a transfer case to drive both rear axles. However this home built rig never saw over 35 mph as it was on the sand at Pismo almost exclusively. It did work though, saw it do 6 wheel burnouts a time or two. - 04superdutyExploreri remember the Dodge T-rex 6x6 having a transfer case attacked to the first rear drive axle. they had the case angled so the output to the rear was over the axle.

I forgot about the air springs.
I can't see the pics here at work, but as I recall at least one (if not both) axles are on air bags. To pick it back up he'd need to just put some more air in the bags. - SecuritiExplorer

It doesn't matter if you needed the extra axle or not, you have one NEAT LOOKING RIG.

I will accept almost all this. It is hard to believe a 5000 pound truck camper puts no weight on ft axle. But if you say so. I will try to believe.
Pretty much. With full fresh water and empty waste I add 200 lbs to the front axle. Empty water and it is balanced over the axle. With full waste tanks I take 150 lbs off the front axle.Securiti wrote:
And as for my 3500 pounds. That is empty. Now add in 160 Gallon of water. (Tank is in front) Add in 4 propane bottles. Add in the extra 125 gallons on diesel fuel in the bed tank. Etc: I think I am over your 5000 pounds.
Well you should have said so :W

Maybe you need to read everythig. The RV weighs nine ton. Not a light RV by a long shot.
No, you're what I'd call over-sensitive. I'm the same person who's made several constructive posts to this thread, no need to take shots at me.
The full 9 tons isn't bearing down on the rear of your pickup, only the pin weight. On the other hand, the entire weight of a truck camper sits right on the rear axle.
You stated that the pin weight was 3,500 lbs. If you talk about 3,500 lbs over on the camper forum that would be considered a mid-weight. Many of the behemoth truck campers are weighing in over 5,000 lbs, all on one axle.
The axle you have should be good for over 9,000 lbs and having rubber good for that weight is a breeze. With a ballpark 3,000 lb empty rear axle weight you're barely over half load on the axle.
This isn't a necessity project, you're having fun. All the more power to you, it looks cool.

Now when I hit them dips in the road. Is my truck going to rock like a boat. And go out of control. That would be a no. The only thing I look for here is positive people making comments that help with project. Because there are things people here have suggested. And yes I used there Ideas. In 15 pages. There has been one negative person. Them odds are not bad. That means the other 99 percent are positive people. And that’s what I choose to be around in life. Good people. Not the ones that drag you down with DRAMA. - Matthew_BExplorer
