D to E rated tires

Do you have aluminum or steel rims?
ST tires perform best when inflated to their maximum pressure. Goodyear and Discount Tires states this on one of their sites.
Install steel valve stems.
Balance your new tires

Fact, not doubtful at all. The maximum rated tire pressure for the aluminum rims on my TT are clearly marked on the inside of the wheels. The tire must be removed from the rim to access this information.

Just because in your one instance, the info was in an obscure location doesn't make that location the rule. A much larger sample is needed to establish a norm. A sample of one is not a sample, it is an anomily.

My steel wheels have no psi rating only a max weight rating. I have 5200 lb axles and made the switch to E rated tires aired them to carry the weight I wanted them to hold and have not looked back. Completely satisfied with the jump and reserve capacity available.

According to my wheel manufacturer, if you have 6 lug rims they should take 80psi. If 5 lug 65 would be the max. That is how I found out about my six lug rims (I switched from D to E, and have 5200lb axles with 6 lug wheels.

The question of load capacity and Load Range gets asked a lot, so it seems to be a bit of a stumbling block for a number of RV owners. Here is an example:
"I need to replace the ST235/75R15 tires on my trailer. Currently have load range C tires which is sufficient for the maximum trailer weight when inflated to 50psi but allows almost no safety margin. I want to change to either load range D or E tires. My rims are only rated for 65 psi so if I went to the load range E tires I would only be able to inflate them to 65 psi. My question is this. Is there any advantage to a load range E tire used at 65 psi vs a load range D tire at 65 psi?"

Now just because he is asking about a 15" trailer application and considering a change from LR-C to LR-D it does not mean the general answer does not apply to others, even if they are considering a change from LR-G to LR-H on a Goodyear 295/75R22.5 Class-A tire.

He will gain a safety margin if he increases his inflation to 65psi with LR-D but if he stays at 65psi there is nothing further gained by going to LR-E as there is no difference in the capacity at 65psi.

Not true! You will probably need 65 maybe 70psi. Weigh your axles and compare to the weight inflation chart for the new tires add 5psi to what the chart says. This is per GY tech Support for up sizing load ratings.

Most all new trailer rims don't have psi ratings. They have weight ratings only. Weight ratings correspond with weights for the tires.
Example. A 15x6 6-5.5 rim will be rated for 2830lbs. Common tire on that rim is 225/75/15D rated at 2540lbs. You can jump to an E rated 225/75/15 and get the 2830lbs. IMO though you'd be wearing the center of the tire out since you wouldn't have the needed load on it if you run the max 80psi. Run the original 65psi.

The Max. stamped on the sidewall is NOT the recommended pressure in all applications. It sounds to me like you are putting on tires with a higher capacity and since your actual load does not change, neither should the recommmended pressure.

(Steel wheels = another doubtful on mfgr source)

Also doubtful that "asking a/your tire man" may help - other than selling you some wheels you may not need.
(However - he might be a good source for the Taco Bell menu from his previous employer..:R..)


Bottom line -
*YES* - you *DO* need to run psi at -or real close- to the max indicated on the sidewall (which is usually 80psi for LR E tires).

You at parroting the ST band aid info! Most ST tire manufactures state full sidewall pressure in a hope that there tires will last 3 years. If the same tire is used across a trailer manufactures line for many different weight units, why would they all need the same inflation other than the product is questionable to start with?
