DELAMINATION REPAIR OF POSSIBLE PURCHASE

Would you consider a rig that had a cap replaced to delamination? Dealer says he not sure of reason for delamination as it was replaced prior to arriving to his lot?

WIS delamination always caused by water damage?

  • I have never seen or heard of a cap delaminating, they are usually a fiberglass molded product. Is the unit you are looking at new or used and the brand would be helpfull. Back in 2005 Jayco had some problems with side walls and 2005&6&7 Forest River had problems- These problems were caused by the glue not water. Be carefull

I agree, most front caps are molded fiberglas just like fiberglas boat hulls and are not subject to delamination. Some units also use molded ABS caps, but again they won't delaminate. Maybe the front cap was really replaced for some other reason. There are some low end units have front caps with flat fiberglas sheeting that is curved in place. These use wood backer board and studs and will be subject to water damage.

Regardless of type of front cap, it may have been removed to allow repairing the sidewalls. You should inspect inside and outside of the trailer carefully. Pictures plus year, brand and model would be helpful in getting more useful feedback.

  • It would have to be really, really, REALLY cheap! Even then it would probably not be a good idea.
  • I agree I wouldn't want the hassle....If the delamination occurred on the cap of the rig and replaced does that mean that related issue can be hidden still? Does it mean a highly likely chance of the delamination on other walls of the unit? Dealer was upfront about delamination of the cap.
  • No its not always caused by water. For instance, some Forest RIver trailers had problems with the glue they used back in 2006. They quickly failed and were repaired under warranty though.
Personally I just wouldn't want the headache of not knowing if it was really fixed or not. There are LOTS or used units on the market.
