I like the idea of the v-notch ... thanks ... stupid question, though ... Is this something I get at the Chevy dealer or on my own? Are they hard to change back and forth, if needed?
Are there any other "options" needed on the truck, like skid plates, rear locking differential or integrated trailer brakes?
Sorry for all the truck questions, just want to get it right the first time.
You've been very helpful, M Go Blue.
The V-notch steel gate is what I have and purchased at Camping World but there are many online places to get the tailgates. I tried the molded plastic V-notch tailgate and didn't like it...remember they are truck specific. Very easy to put on and take off. Below is one place I have bought from before:
TAILGATE
Should already have brakes on the trailer and make sure your truck has the trailering package and the newer trucks have an integrated brake controller...if not Prodigy makes a nice brake controller. Should also be a 7-pin connection plug in the bed of the truck, if not you need to get that installed
PRODIGY
As for a hitch if you plan on going with a short-bed truck get a sliding hitch (whether you choose it to be automatic sliding or manual sliding is personal preference)...Pullrite makes a nice sliding hitch; I have a Reese hitch with a long bed truck; whatever hitch you choose make sure it is rated for at least 16,000 lbs
I also recommend the truck be a diesel, 1-ton minimum, dually but again this is your choice; I have the dually which helps with stability on the heavier fifth wheels which is what the Designer is
Don't hesitate to ask any other questions... - sanderson_66ExplorerYup...M GO BLUE knows his stuff!! Welcome cdelv66. Hey we have the same last name:W.
- cdelv66ExplorerOne more quick question ... Reese vs PullRite? I'm leaning toward the PullRite, but I have to admit I still need to do some research on this topic.
Thanks again. - cdelv66ExplorerI like the idea of the v-notch ... thanks ... stupid question, though ... Is this something I get at the Chevy dealer or on my own? Are they hard to change back and forth, if needed?

We nhave the same truck you are looking at but the 2005 version...excellent truck!
As for the tailgate it comes down to personal choice...stock tailgate, no tailgate, V-notch tailgate, mesh tailgate are the many different ways you can go...
As for us we have the steel V-notch tailgate so we don't have to worry about putting it down or up...works for us! - cdelv66ExplorerFirst Question ... I'm in the market to buy a new truck to pull the 39' Jayco Designer ... I've pretty much set my mind on the Chevy Silverado 3500 HD, LTZ, 4x4, Ext. Cab, Long Box, Duramax Diesel Engine and Allison Transmission. I've done a lot of research on the Towing Weight Ratings, etc. However, does anyone use the "mesh" tailgates as suggested in some articles?
- cdelv66ExplorerM Go Blue,
Ha Ha ... I picked that interior color on purpose because it did NOT match our dishes, sheets, etc. either ... how else could I justify a shopping spree!
cdelv66 - M_GO_BLUE1Explorercdelv66,
We originally looked at the Grand Cayman interior and noticed that everything was leather include the Lazy Boys, sofa and the seats on the dinette chairs...very nice but each was two-tone leather...i.e. sofa was a grayish leather with tan arms....and quickly changed our mind to the Bravada Brick interior...
...and BTW my dear wife, before we even took delivery of our 35RLTS, discovered our dishes didn't match the interior...amazingly neither did the sheets, bedspread, silverware, throw blankets, cups, etc., etc. etc. didn't match either...amazing! - M_GO_BLUE1Explorer
