Frank's Autoformer? Available?

I just punched "Frank's autoformer" in the computer and found them, also found a forum thread where most people said they were sorry they ever bought one. Also found a hughs autoformer, 50 amp, at Walmart for $509. Are you sure you need or want one? In 20 years of motor homing I've only found about 3 instances where I might have used one. Two of those were parks where I checked the voltage before I hooked up and I got my money back and left the park. The other case I had to run my generator in mid afternoon when everyone else turned on the acnd.

I read on another forum that Frank passed away and the voltage booster is no longer available.
You might find some NOS or a used item.

If spending money today I would buy a Hughes unless you get a great deal on a Franks.
And I have a Franks. Picked it up in person a decade ago from Frank himself.

I have had some issue with my 30 amp superautomatic in the past.
Recently I dialed in the boost and cut-off voltages and it should work beautifully now.

We went with the Hughes.

We volunteered at a COE park in WV and were issused a Hughes autoformer as were the other 5 volunteers there. VC said they had had problems in high demand times as we were way out on the line and electric company hadn't upgraded the area.

Franks sells a "50 amp" autoformer with a 30 amp capacity rating.. Consider this (They also sell or sold a true 50) I suspect many have been "Burned" By getting the smaller "50 amp" that's reall a 30.

BUT. that said. I have a Hughes and am very happy with it.. One park I stay at it's a major MUST HAVE.

I would have suggested you look at the Sola Basic unit which is about $200 usd. However, you have to have a friend pick it up in Mexico.

The Sola basic does the following boosts:

110 volts 10%
100 volts 20%
90 volts 30%

It bucks at 135 volts (-10%)

Like my Amex card, I never plug in without the Hughes. That said, I found another one last year at a thrift shop for $10. Took me about a millisecond to snatch that one up. :) ...Dennis

I have the Hughes 50 amp. It had a component failure which boosted high voltage (128 VAC) even more (135 VAC). High voltage is a problem in Mexico. It was repaired and works fine now.

As Pianotuna suggests, the Sola is an option worth considering although not easily found. The Sola will adjust for both high and low voltage while the Hughes will only adjust for low voltage. I have not personally seen high voltage in the USA.

If we are going to Mexico, what and where would we look for a Sola Unit? Are they all hardwired? Do they make a 30amp? Pictures anyone.
