Do you guys know what would be the best MPG Diesel Truck to pull my 2012 26 Foot Fifth Wheel (7,580 lbs). Thanks for your help.
If you are worried about least cost per mile, the best truck might not be a diesel for that small load.
I am a diesel guy. But sometimes a good gasser makes sense too. Especially if you are not towing long distances and a lot of miles per year.
This should be the standard first reply for gas vs diesel.
I own 2007 Ford F150 (not diesel) and can't get more than 8 MPG. - Camper_2012Explorer

If you are worried about MPG, you need to reconsider having an RV. Need to concentrate on more important things like towing capacity, stability, comfort on the road as you are going to be spending a lot of time in it. You also need to consider the type of terrain you are going to hauling over. Missouri is very hilly, so you are gonna want something that will hold speed going uphill and bleed off speed on downhill to save wear and tear on the brakes.
Is your weight based on owners manual documentation or on a scale? Is it empty weight or fully loaded for camping weight? Lots of variables here.
Bottom line most diesels get between 8.5 to 14 mpg towing a load. Depending on the above variables.
It is empty weight on owners manual documentation. Thanks. - Camper_2012Explorer

2x4 Dodge 94-2002 with manual transmission. 94-98 will be 12V and 98.5 to 2002 will be 24V. Late one with 6 speed would be the best.

If you want the best fuel economy stay away from any first generation DPF equipped trucks of all brands.
Also the new DPF/DEF equipped trucks are making excellent fuel economy with massive power compared to the older trucks with half the power.- transamz9Explorer

Still flying the flag. :B
Keep flyin' I have nothing to prove to you. I can tell you that my 13 Cummins won't come close to my '05 towing , empty or around town. My FIL's '03 Duramax and his '13 Duramax won't touch it either. He was begging me to sell my '05 to him when I bought the new one. I will sell my '13 before the '05.;) - transamz9Explorer

Thats is some kind of freak milage, all my buddies with common rail dodges (tuned/built motors or not) see 10-12 with 12k and never see 23 empty unless all that is mostly driving downhill, some of them guys have 500-1000hp motors thru a EFI live/CSP5 and are always trying to find the best mileage towing. even thoe I am a duramax guy I would trade my 650hp @ the wheels for your rig if I could get that mileage, congrats....bobx2 wrote:

He asked best!!! I gave the best answer so far. The trucks I identified will get 14-15 towing his trailer maybe even a little higher and 24-25 empty on the highway. Chris
Gonna have to raise the BS flag on these numbers. Take 5 mpg off of them, and then they are realistic.
I can get 12 mpg out of my 05 Cummins towing 18,000 if I take my time and empty out on the road I get 22-23 not trying. If I slowed down to 65 then I know I can bust over 25 empty. The best I have ever seen was a 400 mile weekend trip on very straight 2 lane. I average 27 mpg hand calculated for that trip. That was a once in a blue moon trip though. With cruise set @ 75 I'm in the 22-23 range empty. So put your flag away.;)
Most people with 500-1000 hp trucks are not trying to get the best mileage. Sorry. - rhagfoExplorer III

That size 5er could likely be towed with a F150 EcoBoost Max/Max. I guess what your plans are, is this a starter 5er with plans to move larger later on?
If so be looking at a 350/3500 at least a SRW, and even a DRW depending what you think your final size might be. If buying new TV then any of the big three would do the job and get about the same mileage.
If looking older, stay clear of any 6.X Ford diesel, all early emission diesels suffered in the fuel mileage, but had power.
I drive a 2001 Cummins and get hand calculated;
13 to 15 city
20 empty open road at 65
12 to 13 towing 11,000# 5er (19,000 GCVW) - Tom_BarbExplorer

Just having this discussion with my wife yesterday, as we are dreaming of upgrading from a pop-up to possibly a motorhome or maybe a larger TT.
I've had that discussion between every make and model we have ever owned and ended with the Newmar. I wish I had bought it first.
I just had a wiring issues, the parts were here next day.
Newmar is the only builder that survived the recession and continues to support every coach they have built, even when the warrantee has expired.
love the big coach, they are a life time buy.
