Educate me why GM 1 ton towing capacity is so much less

than current 1 ton Dodge and Ford.

I figure better to ask here than in a specific GM, Ford, or Dodge forum.

The power ratings are now all pretty much on par, so why is the GM rated so much lower?

Granted, even the GM spec is more than enough for 99% of fifth wheels out there, so for that use the difference is moot, but why did GM decide to bow out of that battle?

Is the GM better riding because of softer suspension, maybe?

  • I own a 2016 GM Dually, so I'll throw my thoughts in on this. For one thing GM doesn't offer the 4.10 rear axle ratio for the Duramax equipped trucks. The only gear ratio available since the start of the Duramax trucks has been 3.73. The other thing I think is the Allison transmission gear ratios. Ram (Aisin) and Ford have much deeper transmission ratios than GM's Allison. Although the Allison has a much better reverse gear ratio. With the new towing "J2807" (don't know if that is the correct #) requirements, the higher geared GM has a big disadvantage getting started on the hills with the bigger loads that Ram and Ford have their trucks rated at. Just my thoughts on it.

I tow up to 30,000 lbs with my Ford and although the truck can get the job done it is still just a little pick up truck. GM probably rates their truck where the other guys should.

To be clear, I'm not looking to stir up drama. I'm a current GMC Dually owner, a 2004, and am in the market for a new TV.

From a styling point of view, I'm still a GM guy regarding current crop of 1 tons, and 23k towing capacity is more than enough for my planned rig, but I'd still like to know why it's ~7k lbs less than the competition when power is basically equal.

I have an '03 Duramax that I still use. The difference between it and my Ford is unbelievable. Whether you drive a GM Ram or Ford the new trucks are all extremely capable. If you like the styling of the GM best I would recommend you buy a GM.
  • Several things that could come into play. True ready to go down the road weight being one. Suspension is another.

    Really, Todd? Yes you are.

  • I am not sure why but I know my Silverado 3500HD rides very smooth and the cabin is nice and quiet. That tells me more steel and such in the build so maybe it’s heavier than the others and that would reduce towing capacity.
