Finding a well-built rig

I am brand-new to this forum. My wife and I are getting ready to enter the world of fifth wheel camping. We are looking for a higher-end, well-built unit since we plan to spend at least 3-4 months a year living in it. I had my heart set on the Keystone Alpine-- attractive floorplans, great features, etc, but lately I have been hearing negative things about the workmanship and more importantly, customer service. We plan to buy within the next 9-10 months and would appreciate any help from you members out there! Comments from Alpine owners?
  • This will probably turn into a Ford/Chevy type of debate. However, while the Alpine is nice, I certianly do not put in the the catergory of high end.
High end to me would be DRV, Excel, and Lifestyle of the production line fivers. All 3 have box frames and offer disc brakes, etc.
You may want to disclose your planned budget and what your tow vehicle will be, as well. I'm sure lots of info will flow your way. Good luck with your choice and have fun shopping. Phillip
  • Go to RV Dreams or just Google Jack Mayer, he currently has the finest 5th wheel made today for sale...he is selling his New Horizons, read about them, good luck.
  • Your best bet is to go to a large RV show put on by an RV organization or group of dealers not just one dealer. There you will be able to compare models from the different manufacturers. Choose a few to research further and spend time on the internet to see what owners and RV media has to say about the models you've chosen. Narrow it down to a couple.

Find them in your area and then go spend a half a day in each one just like you were living in it. Try out all the amenities, sit on the toilet, stand in the shower, spend time in the chair you will be relaxing in...etc. Does it fit you, are you comfortable, does the RV overall give you a warm and fuzzy feeling.

Just an observation regarding RV manufacturer problems. Over the years I've noticed that many RV manufacturers begin to have quality issues, failures and complaints as their models or a model becomes popular. It's either due to so many people buying the model the complaints will seem high because of the sales volume or the quality suffers because the manufacturer pushes the build teams to keep up with demand.

Most new RVs seem to have 10 + problems in the first year after purchase. The dealer or manufacturer will take care of these as they pop up. Unfortunately it can take up a lot of your time but most of the problems will be build quality issues rather than major failures

After 25 years RVing I would look at,
    New horizons
    Excel
    Mobile suites
  • Look at an Excel by Peterson Ind, they are a little on the heavy side but built for full timing and have great customer support. They have 3 lines, the Winslow, the Limited and the toy hauler Wild Cargo. Most dealers in in the middle in of the US and will do some customizing for an ordered unit.

  • Have you considered the Bay Hill from Evergreen RV or Outdoors MFG?
