Garage Workshop

Hi guys, sorry if this has been discussed before but a search didn't show anything. Has anyone made their toy hauler garage into a workshop?
  • I guess it's what you mean as a workshop. Toolbox and small bench would probably ok. I my case the tools I use would overload a trailer in no time. Vertical mill, engine lathe, surface grinder and welder are all very heavy.
  • You can use the room for whatever you wish. We recently stumbled upon a dog show for German shepherds. Lot's of folks using TH's as kennels.

I wish....I was thinking portable table saw, chop saw, basic cabinetry tools with bench and toolbox. Noise level in a CG would be an issue for sure.
  • BurbMan just after we bought our Raptor in 2007 I came across a guy that had just what you're talking about. Pretty sweet setup, he made things on the road to sell while they camped, they were full timers. But the noise issue was an issue he said. The campground he was in when I saw him wouldn't allow him to run any equipment, and he was very undertanding. There were times he'd take the RV out and work on his projects. He said some campgrounds were ok with it. Even fully enclosed some of the equipment was loud. He talked about adding some 2" foam on the inside to see if that would deaden things.

He did have everything bolted to plywood sheets that were then secured to the floor with bolts and extra power circuits.

I think it's worth thinking twice about the noise and your neighbors. I know I would not be happy to hear somebody's saw going it at when I was there to camp, relax and enjoy the sounds of nature.
  • We actually did this. We took our cabinet business "On the Road" I did one job building roll out trays for a mobile home in the park. I felt so guilty for running my tools for 2 days, I never did it again. Things are quiet in the neighborhood once again... I fully agree with Y-Guy!
  • I imagine you would be OK with a jig saw, scroll saw, etc, but anything with a spinning blade like chop saw or table saw would be a terror. Router and planer
are definitely out. Orbital sander also likely a no-go. I'm with you 100% on the noise, I wouldn't appreciate it either, and wouldn't do that to anybody else. Heck I don't even use my outdoor speakers in a CG.

Cabinet shop definitely a non-starter....LOL....BUT, lots of crafts don't involve loud tools, like carving, screen printing, wood burning, etc...
