Gas VS Diesel F250

I have about the same trailer weight as the OP and tow it with an 08 F250 diesel. No problems. I won't say that you don't know the trailer is there but it works just fine. I get about 10 mpg towing and can see 15-16 empty on the interstate. The newer Fords have more power and might be a bit better on fuel mileage. Diesels are great for towing but they are more expensive all they way around...buying, operating, and maintaining. If you're gonna go with a diesel. I agree to go for a 350 since you'll probably want to move up to a heavier trailer eventually and the price difference isn't that much.
