Generator- gasoline or propane?

we had a propane generator in our 36 foot beaver diesel .
it used propane at a ratio of about 1.5 to 1 as gasoline .
we had a big propane tank but when we needed the genny ( winter travels ) i made frequent visits to the propane vendors .
