Generator- gasoline or propane?

Salesman tells me I don't want a propane generator, says it uses too much fuel. He tells me gasoline powered is best for 5th wheel usage. Anyone have some opinions or advice? BTW; this question is regarding onboard gennie, not a portable unit.

  • My generator is LP. We use it very little (think I have less than 150 hours on it) and it works fine. If we used it more I would go with gas.
  • I have gas burner. Uses about 1/2 gallon/hr so 6 gallon tank runs about 12 hours.

To prevent gum-up, every time I fill tank I add sta-bil, 2oz per 5 gallons. This is especially critical with "e" gas. When not dry camping, I try to start unit monthly and let run an hour or so. Equipment needs to be used

This is really something to consider especially if you are using fuel with ethanol. Ethanol begins to separate in as little as 3-4 weeks. Adding stabilizers do help some. The other consideration is the carrying and storage of gasoline.

  • I have had a gasoline Onan in our fiver for ten years. The reason we went with gas was really the availability of gasoline. Before I installed the genny I was wavering either way. But dry camping beside someone at Indianapolis Speedway that had a LP genny made my mind up. There was a gas and go joint just up the street from where we were parked, open 24/7, gas anytime. The nearest propane pumping station was 8 miles and of course limited pumping hours. And since when we dry camp, the water heater, refers, and cooking are using propane and I didn't want the propane consumption rate of the genny affecting those things. But a LP genny will not gum up like the gasoline gen set will if left unused for a long period of time. And this "shortage" of propane now in some areas sheds some other light on the decision.
  • the worst mistake we made when we custom ordered our current 5er was having it equipped with a propane powered generator .... under a minimal load it will go through a 40 lb tank overnight .... my hope is to one day have it converted to burning gasoline
