Grand Lake Colorado

Have pulled a fiver all over Colorado. Has anyone pulled from I-70 to Grand Lake on highway 40 and 34? How good or bad is the road? Have a GMC Duramax and 34' fiver. Thinking about Winding River Resort. Any thoughts on rv park.
  • I'd rather pull through Rocky over Trail Ridge any day than pull over Berthoud. Berthoud is straight up and down.

Better to go I70 through the tunnel to Silverthorn and up through Kremmling and back to Grand Lake, its an easy pull, but very long.

Stayed at Winding River and it was nice.
  • yep - done it numerous times. In fact, leaving in a couple hours to head that way, but this time going further up near Kremmling.

40 over Berthoud pass is a good pull and the uphill portions are two lanes, but the downhill is one lane with many unpaved pullouts which you need to use to let cars get past you. I usually stay in the USFS CGs and drive the car over Trail Ridge to Estes Park to remind me why I like Grand Lake so much.
  • You should be fine on 70 to 40 to 34. Just take it easy over those passes. Main pass there is Berthoud pass and it has a few sharp turns but I've seen plenty of big rigs doing it. Don't let the people behind you push you out of your limits and you'll do fine. Grand Lake is a beautiful area to camp.
  • I used to take I-70 and U.S. 40 thru Empire etc, And I didn't think there was anything wrong with it. I love the GL area! Craig
  • I always go to GL over TrailRidge. Don't recommend pulling a trailer though. I don't like I-70 much but it's about the only way and it's doable
