Guess I won't get a toy hauler

We currently have a 2009 Montana with these specs. It's listed at 10,575. We've been talking about a new toyhauler around the same length but I don't want to go much heavier though it looks like many people do. Here's my weigh ticket

GVWR on my truck is 10,100 and payload is 2,966. Given, when I weighed yesterday, there was about a half tank of water, grill, and all the other stuff that stays in the trailer like dishes, etc...

I like the Grand Design but some of them have a dry weight of 13,500 lbs. Is everyone that I see towing with a truck like mine, a SRW 3500 diesel, that much overweight? I do have airbags and want disc brakes on any future trailer we buy.
  • For some reason, I can't post a photo from Photobucket like I did in the past. Anyway, here's what I was trying to post:

    steer axle 4,680 lbs
    drive axle 6,060
    trailer axle 9,820

    gross weight 20,560
  • With a truck GVWR of 10,100 you will be limited to a FW/TH GVWR of 14K

I have same GVWR and tow a 14K FW (13,870# Scaled)
It puts me over trucks GVWR and right at Rear Tire Max Load Rating just under Trucks RAWR.

Pin weight is 2900# (FW fully loaded)

YES folks are towing way overweight........either out of ignorance OR just don't care
  • Its pretty well known that an equivalent size toyhauler is going to be heavier than a non-toyhauler model. The frames have to be engineered to hold additional payload. Then factor in loading of toys (reason you buy a hauler..) and your going to be even heavier yet. To stay around the same weight as your current setup you will have to downsize on the TH. No free lunch here...

17's rated at 3195ea gets you 6390 legal on the rear axle. The 'other guys' are either overloaded, or have a higher capacity tire than you or I. There is a 3450lb tire (Nitto if I remember correctly) that will get you a little more capacity. I similar 18" tire will get you around 3650lb capacity.

This depends on the year of the the truck. Current Ram SRW's have a much higher payload than yours as do the other brands. A current SRW Ram can have a GVWR up to 12300#.
  • I have a Grand Design Solitude, and in order to take it off the lot, they had Tampa Spring put a 1000# extra leaf on the F250 SRW Crew Cab Lariat truck and re-certify it to 11000, and they also re-certified the Pin weight as well.
The 5'er weighted in at 14140, pin weigh of 3120, and total GVWR 11, 020 #. The total gross weigh of both was 22,100#
I added air bags to help keep the porpoising to a minimum.
I also put all terrain tires on it to get the extra weight rating of the tires (3680 each).
Just finished a 11,000 mile trip out west, and had no problems.
  • My '04 Ram was just fine towing my previous hauler at 14,500 scaled. My current rig is 19,000 (no liquids) and the Ram just couldn't hack it.
  • You could look at TT versions...we have a Keystone carbon 33. Has many similar features for a lot less money and you could pull it with ease. It doesn't feel like most TT, has a good interior height but does only have a 10 foot garage.

I ran into a buddy from work that bought a TT bunkhouse two months ago and his wife already wants him to trade for a TH.
