Harbor Freight Motorcycle carrier

Have any of you folks here had experience with the Harbor Freight motorcycle carrier linked below?

Harbor Freight Motorcycle Carrier

Curious of your experience with this carrier on the back of a fiver. I have one and have used it on my Pickup and one time for a short camping trip on the fiver. We are leaving on about a 4500 mile trip and wondering if this thing will hold up to the trip. I will be carrying a Honda Trail 90 (vintage 1975) that weighs about 200#.

Thanks for your help

Steve

  • I had a frame mounted receiver on our previous camper where I used a single stinger basket to carry a 165# generator and some other supplies. It was rated to 400#. What failed were the welds on the basket due to the vibration and torque put on the single stinger. The new camper has two receiver tubes welded to the frame and basket has two stingers to eliminate the torque. Has made now over 5000 mile without a problem. I would have someone custom make a bike carrier with two stingers and reveivers to carry a motor bike, just my opinion.

If you are planning on using this type of carrier on the bumper of the trailer instead of the tow vehicle I would do some serious beef up of the trailer frame/bumper metal works.

There isn't much to work with on the OEM RV trailer bumpers...

There are a few photos here on this google link showing what others have done. Might give you some ideas.

The unit he is considering is a receiver-mount carrier. On my former 5th wheel, it had a frame mounted receiver installed at the factory. He should however verify the tongue weight rating of his receiver.

I had a custom hitch receiver fabricated last year that is welded to the frame rails and fully reinforced and can withstand that much weight without a problem.

  • The one in the link you sent has a 400 pound weight limit. I would make sure and stay within that.
  • I also have the steel version, worked fine for a Honda 80cc scooter. Obscures the license plate if you have a rear plate, so you would need to move the plate and add a light to be legal in some jurisdictions.

  • I use a steel version.

But... I had the bumper replaced with real steel (1/4") and had a frame shop gusset it to the frame. Added three 2" receivers to the top. Center one for the motorcycle rack, and the other two for outriggers to keep it secure. Did about 8000 miles on it last year - no problem.

I also made a large tray that I put an large aluminum storage box on. We use this whenever we are not taking the scooter. Holds all the "stuff".
