Heartland Quality

While camping this past w/e, mother nature decided she wanted to shed some tears and offered some water from the skies. Curtailing from doing some things around the campground, we decided to head to nearby RV dealer to look at some RV's. Was a very good sized Heartland dealer and had many models on hand. Few caught our attention and like other mfrs, always talk up on how good their product is to others. That being said, how does the quality of Heartland stack up against FR, Keystone, Thor etc. Any difference in model lines? Lippert frames? They all seemed to be on the heavy side even dry and not a lot of cargo capacity as opposed to other brands w/ same max GVW.

As always, you input greatly and highly appreciated.
  • We're a few months into owning a Heartland Oakmont 390MBL and have been pretty pleased. There are only a few exceptions to that.

    1. we've had a few pieces of trim that needed to be re-applied. no biggie
    2. The televisions are "Summit" brand - and they are terribly cheap. We've replaced them all with Samsung smart TV's
    3. all of the coax connections were loose. While I had the basement wall down, I tighten every one I could reach.
    4. ALL of the valves that you need access to in order to winterize the RV are behind the basement wall. someone didn't think that all the way through!

But the positives really outweigh that stuff. the fridge is a residential version and gets cold very quickly. The built-in vacuum sure is nice. one less piece of kit to carry. even in 104 degree temps it stayed cool this summer. Given both AC's were running full blast, but it did keep cool. we've had no problems with structure, water intrusion, slides, etc. The grill is kind of a joke, but it works. having a second bedroom sure is nice. the teenage daughter likes having her own personal space and we still get the large rear living room. the lippert 6 point leveling system works well. the RV is very stable even with the legs extended almost all the way out. The painted front cap is nice. easy to clean, easy to wax. Big stainless sink is nice, and the hot water tank gets hot very quickly even when running electric only.

All in all we are quite happy with the purchase. gotta love those heated massage recliners!

The service from my local dealer is terrible. but thats not a heartland product issue.
  • We have been very happy with our two Bighorns and are looking to purchase our third in the next few months.

I traded my 2011 Big Country for a new Cedar Creek. Heartland dealers are getting hard to find in my neck of the woods. Used to be a lot of them. Less frills, good solid construction with none of the cheap fall apart do-dads. Name brand furniture, appliances and carpet with warranties that are good anywhere, not no name junk. We did a lot of shopping and kept going back to the Creek. JMHO.

Same here about dealers. But those I talked with when shopping for our recent toy hauler, multiple dealers said Heartland was getting too hard to work with and quality control was really suffering.

Our 2011 Cyclone was terrible. Dealing with Heartland was a nightmare.

Just an FYI, Heartland is owned by Thor now.

Doesn't Thor own Keystone and Jayco as well?

We have our list narrowed down to Cedar Creek Silverback and Big Country. Have been very pleased w/ current CC and happy w/ CC customer service which has had many accolades. All RV's are massed produced and we both like/dislike some things on both lines. Much like trucks, will always be a not so good one that rolls out the door.
  • Heartland customer service is great but be aware that the 1 yr warranty means just that. I am having issues with the ramp on my 20 month old toy hauler. Heartland said "Sorry Charlie". The ramp was built by Lippert so I can't blame Heartland too much. Lippert is also trying the "Sorry" line but I'm still trying to get them to replace it. Obviously a ramp that looks new and never been wet should not have soft spots and it does.

The Lippert "Level-Up" system I have is also not the apple of my eye either. Another story.
