Okay, listen up. This is free and idiot-proof.
1. Get a plastic soda bottle (20 oz. should work)
2. Fill it half full of water and recap it. (Gives it some weight for stability)
3. Get a 4' string.
4. Tie one end of string around the bottle neck and the other end to a tiedown in your truck bed that you can easily reach.
5. Back your truck "into position".
6. Place soda bottle on hitch plate, just ahead of slot.
7. Back up more, lining up bottle and pin.
8. When you're within a foot or two, get out and raise or lower the 5er pin to line up with the plate.
9. Back into pin until hitch latches around/behind it. Bottle will fall to front of hitch (where you can retrieve it with the string).
I've heard/read of some people mounting a rod ahead of the plate that swings down upon contact with the pin, which sounds good also. My way will never cost more that a bottle of soda and a string. (The string is optional but will make it easier to retrieve your bottle should it roll out of reach.)
X2 Been using this method for 5 years. Instead of the string I use a pair of grabbers. Just grab the neck of the bottle and place it on the hitch plate.
