How to take your skiff with you?

I want to buy a small boat to take camping with me so I can take my Son out fishing while we are camping but I'm not sure how to load it up.Ive got a Cougar and the rear bumper slides out about 30" and says it's rated for 200lbs but I'm not sure how to fit it on there so I was wondering if anyone has any experience with this and pics.

This setup should work well with a 5th wheel trailer. For me however this is would a hugh effort to load the boat on the top of the truck... Looks like great clearance all the way around and would not interfere with turns etc while towing the the fifth wheel. I have seen KAYAKs mounted this way but not a full boat

that linked boatloader would work great with this. get the electric one and just push a button and up and on it goes. in fact that sort of looks like it is one of those boat loaders.

How would you tell when the stop light turns red or green with this setup? Wait for everyone to start honking at you?

  • I bought an inflatable Sea Eagle Fast Track kayak to take in the 5er - but I will vouch for the toughness/quality of their products which also includes boats. Many products designed to go on the water are the new "high PSI", which includes inflatable paddleboards that are very rigid.

I like the safety aspect of multiple-chamber inflatables.

  • Perhaps an inflatable boat. We used to do a lot of blue water sailing and had an inflatable boat pushed by a small outboard to get ashore. You could store that, when not inflated, in the bed of your truck. It would cost about the same as a small boat combined with the cost of a rig to carry the small boat. And, it would be
    much more stable.

"Eide boat loader" Not cheap and you have to make rack go further up front due to 5th wheel. Trailer RV's are easier. Mine was manual and liked it. Guy at work saw what I had and he went first class, he got elec one. He had some elec problems with elec. Water and elec just don't do well together IMO. My thinking was less to go wrong with manual model. Of course if you have big outboard they get heavy quick. And everything in the boat has to be below the gunnels. So it is a hassle as most everything has to come out of boat because boat does a endo as it picks it up and then flops down on rollers and rolls forward into place. Their wheels are junk if you use boat in salt water IMO. Plastic and not enough width for soft sand. Went to wheel barrow wheels and brackets made on stainless steel, worked good. The motor carrier is nothing more than couple pieces of metal you can rig up in garage in couple hours.

OK just my 2 cents worth. There are probably lots of good carrying devices out there.
Just read your post again. What is nice is being able to drop RV at campground and wife does her thing and I go fishing. Being able to drive around with boat and no RV opens a lot of area.

I looked into those years back myself. also liked the outboard motor mount that let you put the motor on the bracket, then slide and lock it in the truck bed. mount wheels on the transom and put their ball hitch thingy on the bow and move the boat around.

  • 12 years portaboting, fantastic. 12 footer, 5hp Nissan outboard. Stored for travel under travel ytrailer.
  • Check out Porta-Bote. Lots of folks with RVs use them. They can be folded down and carried in brackets on the side of your Cougar. I have the same pull out tray on the back of my Cougar, and I would be very careful about putting a boat on it.

  • Why don't you get a trailer for the boat and pull it behind the 5th wheel? That is what our Sun does with his 19 ft. center console.
