Ideas for joining two gates together

So to try explain, since the pictures were taken I had a new fence built along the side of yard, so put in two new gates I had made, but that only opened up one area, so now I found when bringing fifth wheel out it is tight to garage overhang which I cut back a bit, and it is doable going out, but backing back in it is tighter due to the alley and neighbours fence across the way, plus it seems just as I get the trailer in I am going to hit the gate with the truck on the section of fence left on, so now I am picking up a used gate and am hoping on the right side to join the two together so I can still open just two for regular traffic, but will be able to open wide up for backing back in with fifth wheel attached, any ideas what one can use to join two together and allow them to pivot?

  • Sure appreciate the info, picked up a used gate tonight in great shape for forty dollars, it is 9 feet long and 55" high, so should work well.
  • you could set a tube into the ground that you set a post in and secure the short gate onto and hinge the center gate from. then just lift the post out of the ground and drag the gate and post to the side. Contact a fence company I do think there are clamp mounts that make a pair of gates into a double jointed gate.
  • Thanks for the feedback, since the picture that corner is all cleared out, so it is the gate that when it is back I hit, but maybe trying to swing it out into alley would be good, but I think it still would be nice to have all gate and get rid of the old crappy fence piece that is left, but I had not thought of joining two together by welding, that would make like one said one to open for car and the other open only for fifth wheel.
  • Glad that is not my problem! I have rolling gates and come in from the front and out the back.

Before getting too tricky with double swing gates, try rethinking. Looking at the middle picture, I assume you approach coming toward the camera and then back toward the driver's side to get into the driveway.

Move the topper out of the way. After you come past the driveway, swing the gate on the topper side OUTWARD into the alley. This lets you tuck the tail of the trailer into the space where the topper is now on the first pass. Pull forward and center it on the second (or third) pass. Might be worth a try.

I have seen double hinged gates in industrial applications that used a removable post at the hinge point. Set a length of 2.5" or 3" steel pipe into the ground at the point where the two gates overlap; flush with the surface. After the trailer is in, drop a full length piece of 2" (OD) gate post into the sleeve and chain the gates to the post.

Without ever having used such a setup, it would seem like the pipe in the ground would constantly get full of dirt, grass clippings, trash etc and be a PITA to insert the temporary post.

    Anybody else have ideas???

ON EDIT: Tractor Supply has ten foot gates in stock. Two of them expand your opening to 20'. Not easy to handle and you need really sturdy gate posts (8"x8" x 10' timbers set in concrete???) but a BIG opening.
  • I think I understand. I had a similar problem. I had a space 28 feet wide and had three sections of gate. I tied the 10 and 6 foot sections together to make a 16 which I leave closed except when taking the RV out. The 12 foot section swings from the opposite side and is usually left open for auto access. I used two clamps and a long pipe to hold the two sections together. The clamps are made for connecting sections of chain link fence and should be available at HomeDepot. They look like two rounded "W"s with a bolt through the center. One at the top and bottom hold the two sections together. Then I took a 16 foot section of pipe (used for the top of chain link fences) and bolted it to the top of the two sections of gate - that stiffens the whole contraption. Works pretty well for me. I'm on the road so I can't take a picture - sorry.
  • have a portable welder come & weld up a hinge between both gate ends. This can be done with pipe & solid rod.
