Installing hitch/cargo carrier to back of 5er

Assuming the trailer is rated to take a hitch on the back bumper is ther any concern with installing a cargo carrier to haul a couple nights worth of fire wood? Looking to remove some weight from the bed of my truck and make loading/uloading a bit easier.

  • Without a signature we can't know what kind of trailer you have. If the full frame does not extend all the way to the bumber (many do not) then you will have to get frame extensions welded up to support the load. The rear end of a fiver is a violent place at highway speeds.

Just a thought....Do the places you camp allow importing firewood?? Many now don't because of the Emerald Ash Borer although this may be a problem mostly East of the Mississippi.
  • There is a whole lot going on back there. I had a two bike rack that gave way from the movement back there. Remember that is 300# on the receiver and the further back the rack sits the more cantilever effect there is. Also consider the twisting motion from side to side. If I were doing it, I would use two or three receiver to spread the weight. JMO

    Try looking at e trailer.com

    Thank you very much.:)
  • Anyone have a link to where to purchase receiver hitches for the back of trailers?
  • my 5er came with a 2inch reciever rated for 300/3000 from the factory. So 300 lbs of firewood on my hitch would last me many nights camping
  • We have a bolt-on receiver on the rear bumper of our 5ver.
Total weight is around 75 pounds with bike rack and bikes on.
It's pretty solid...IMO it could probably hold twice the weight.

I would be concerned if the weight rack extended more than a foot from the bumper.
    Firewood would be pretty heavy.
  • Never ASSUME. If you trailer is in any way an ultralite or xtralite most will say no.
