INterested in the Trinity Alps and Redwoods area , info

Traveling this area in July, any suggestions for riding areas? Street and dirt? Everything we bring will be street legal, dual sports will be xr600/xr400 and a Buell.

Anything we should see fo' sho' ? Staging I think out of Trinity Center, coming from Mammoth with toys.

Thanks!

    Take your pick!

Trinity Center is a good central staging area for play. Lots of open FS dirt and paved back country roads. Ranshorn would take you over to Dunmuir....short trip down I-5 and Dog Creek would take you home.

Forks of the Salmon is a paved loop for your Buell.....Trinity center, North to Etna, then down to Hoopa, and back home. IP/FR 42N17/Stewart Springs RD's would take you over to Mt Shasta.

I sold my street machine, but have a D/S.....May be able to show you around a little if my schedule allows. :)

Don't beat yourself up too much....you didn't miss much Bob. Too much snow to go anywhere good this time of year.

Look me up when you are planning to be in the area and also check out Pashnit for more road riding stuff.

Went fishing out of Crescent City/Smith River, with a Brother and one of Our Sons and DIL.
Had some fun and a family get together, just saw some DS opportunities while getting there. If I can put together a trip during the warmer months, I will let you know for sure, nothing like local knowledge. Bro lives in Groveland, mostly dirt roads, but decent rides.

    Thanks

  • Drove from Redding to the coast last Sunday, saw many bikes being hauled out in trucks/trailers, they were dirty, so obviously they rode them in the area.
Also saw 2 dual sport bikes on the road, very muddy as well.
Did not get to check anything out since I was following Bro and meeting a Son in Crescent City, so time did not permit any research.
    I DO KNOW THIS
There is a section of Hwy 299 that has some tight curves after Whiskeytown Lake, 15 MPH stuff that I swear turns more than 180 degrees. I was not towing, but the road was muddy/wet/snowy and took some patience to negotiate.
It did spark some interest in getting back up there with the DS bike, Camp somewhere before the tight curves and ride or truck the bike into the forest.
Wish I could have checked things out a little more.

I think it might be tough to find anywhere to ride once you get over the mountain towards the coast, all State or national parks.
  • Have a hard time getting my motorhome in there. .. does it have hookups? :D

Saw a van clean off a mirror there :B

Been to the North Coast many times, but not with a street or dirt bike, so I can say its a nice place to visit, but can't comment on the riding.
  • I have done alot of street riding in that area when I use to live there. My favorite rides were Hwy 36 from Red Bluff to Hwy 101 have lunch then back on Hwy 299. Also Hwy 36/89 and over Mt Lassen. Hwy 299 to Lewiston Rd. Take Trinity Dam road to Hwy 3 then ride past the lake to Calahan, Etna and Fort Jones back to I5.

I can't say much about ridng dirt but I use to have a friend that did a lot of dirt riding in that area. But riding in the back counrty on dirt between Whiskey town and the coast can be hazardous during harvest season if you get my drift.

I use to use Pa****s web site for all the great write ups with pictures he did a great job.. It would be worth the $20 subscription
