Man, I screwed up!! Water Damage

Hello all. I'm in a very bad situation. I bought a Toy Hauler in April. Bought it from an older couple who only used it a few times. The inside is literally in perfect shape. I'm storing at a friends property 2 hours from my house. I went to reseal everything this weekend only to find a musty smell in the front cabinet. My worst nightmare is the whole front nose is covered in black mold. I pulled the front cap off and tried to the let everything dry out as best as I could. I put a huge tarp on it before I headed home. And of course we are having crazy thunderstorms today.

Am I totally screwed? Any way I can get insurance to pay? I completely understand that of lack of maintenance leaks aren't covered. But this must have been going on way before I bought it. Any ideas?

    Yes. I put the Eternabond about 1/2 inch onto the rain gutter. It the sealed the edges. If I didn't have a gutter I would have attached it to the side wall. Take your time and apply it straight/level.


    Did you go right over the existing Lap seal?

    And with the front leaking expect other leaks visible or not. Pull everything you can - drawers, cabinet sides/floors etc inspect for water marks and dry rot with a ice pick. Go over every square inch looking for issues.


    Still working on everything. The insurance adjuster is coming out this week. I'm waiting on a quote from an RV place also. Everything is dependent on what info I get back.

    Did you do the whole side with one piece or cut sections to make it easier?

    I doubt you will get any compensation for the leak. Who will do the repairs for you?

    And with the front leaking expect other leaks visible or not. Pull everything you can - drawers, cabinet sides/floors etc inspect for water marks and dry rot with a ice pick. Go over every square inch looking for issues.

    I 100% agree. The plan will be to remove the whole front cap and remedy the mold first. I couldn't do that yesterday because I was worried I wouldn't be able to get it back on to tow it as it's 2 hours away from my house


    consult with a mold expert. If it's black mold it's nothing to mess with until neutralized. I believe bleach solution will kill it.

    Black mold can be a significant health issue. From your description, as a minimum I would want the front cap removed, and proceed from there as to how much else is needed.
    Companies that clean and remove black mold work in full hazmat protective gear.
