Multiple Blow-outs

Who changed the flats? Nobody carries two spares. You're just ambling along with a damaged fender?

Heat is a factor, but so is driving on old tires.

I am not a tire expert, but have been told that tire pressure and speed are big causes of tire blowout. I have had two blowouts, one on the MH (old tire)and another on the tow dolly (new tire). I routinely check my tire pressure, so I feel that the hotter it is the more likely you are to have a blowout. In both of my cases we were at highway speeds and it was hot when the blowouts occurred. One tire shop person told me that trailer tires are not designed to be run at more than 55MPH. If this is true, then when I am running at 65 MPH the tire would be getting really hot since it is rotating faster than it was designed for IMO. The MH blowout was my fault, I was trying to get one more short trip out of old tires I knew needed changing. JMO

ST tires are rated for 65 MPH. I usually see a difference in temps from one side to the other because of sun position. I use an infrared thermometer whenever I stop.

Just a point of clarification, we carry two spares on rims.

After the first blowout and after the repairs to the fender, we stopped at a Walmart tire center to get another spare. After all repairs and a new spare, one hour later another blowout same side.

Yes road heat, tire pressure, speed, tire load, and age all affect tire blow outs
- ST tires only rated to 65mph
- how old were the tires?. Mine get replaced every 3 years regardless of mileage
- are your tires rated high enough for the load?

Hot roads with older tires at maximum load running over 65 mph would definitely cause problems this trip compared to a previous trip under different conditions

One blow out...then another blow out on same side.
First tire blow out caused second tire to be overloaded.

Blow outs could be due to:
Old age tires.....older than 5 plus yrs.
Under-inflated
Overloaded
Speed
Lack of use....sitting for long periods


What tires do you have?
What PSI to you run them at?
What age are they?

Age of tires did the same thing to me.

While you were on your Alabama/Orlando trip, did you roll over or against any curbs or hit a big pothole or ??? Tires can be damaged and axles can knocked out of alignment when that happens-very hard on tires.

Did you load your 5er differently on the 2nd trip? Perhaps you had a lot more weight on one side-perhaps the tires were overloaded and heated up.

Tire pressures are important too. It seems odd that one side would be OK but not the other, but maybe the sun was a factor, or maybe ??? - Something you can ponder.
