I ordered my unit as there were very specific things I wanted, like DP windows that most stocked units wouldn't have. I emailed my info to multiple dealers, both in state and high volume dealers near the factory. I included my target price which was very aggressive and stated that dealer closest to that price would get the order. Delivery fees were excluded to level the playing field. The best deal was actually just below my target price from a dealer just 150 miles away. Several other dealers were very close and wanted to negotiate further, but I stuck to my plan.
I disagree that you will get the best deal on a stocked unit. These units have a dealer cost plus inventory expenses and cleanup expenses as a display unit. And the dealer must make a profit to cover all of his expenses. An ordered unit takes up no space on the dealers lot and is a guaranteed sale. No need for other customers to see the unit or know what price it is being sold at. Dealer only needs to make a reasonable profit on the deal.
What is key is don't work with a single dealer. Get the best deal w/o delivery fees, then decide if you want to pick it up or have it delivered. Delivery fees are per mile and doesn't matter if the unit goes to a dealer 50 miles from the factory and then 1000 miles to your home or 1000 miles to a dealer just 50 miles from your home.
