Never used FW tank, need to sanitize for use next week, how?

I've never used the fresh water tank in my rig. I have filled it once about 3 years ago and then drained it without using the water. It's a 2009 model and I believe the tank is 54 gal. I need to sanitize it for a trip next week where I plan to use it for showering, toilets, general cleaning, but will try to limit drinking as much as possible. Can you guys give me some advice on how to sanitize it before the trip? Thanks!

If possible, use city water to flush with, in addition to the bleach as described above. The additional chlorine in city water will help. I talked to our local water tech sveral years ago about the same thing. He said that usually in the summer, our chlorine is probably higher than the bleach anyway.

I'm on a well at home, so that's not really an option. But thanks for the advice.

  • Sanitize as instructed below and use the tank for what it was designed for..having water to use for showers, cleaning, and drinking. I have used mine for some 30 years with no ill effects whatever. Oh, I just read where bottled water sales declined last year since it all started in the 1970's as more people are starting to realize that they are only purchasing tap water in bottle and creating an environmental nightmare with all the plastic bottls. Yea!!!!
  • We're going to be camping at a park with full hookups, but temps are supposed to get pretty low so we need to have the fresh water tanks as a backup plan.

I never got into drinking or cooking from the fresh water tanks... Being a fresh ground and brewed bean coffee drinker we found out you have to have the same brand of bottled water to get the taste you want so we always have a couple of gallons of bottled water with us at all time anyway.

We usually just use our fresh water tank for general cleaning, showers, and such....

Just us - nothing unsafe about consumption from the fresh water tanks...

  • Basically, put bleach into the tank and fill it, then pump the water into all your water lines-you should smell the bleach as it comes out of the faucet-let it set for 12-24 hours. Drain the tank and then refill with clean water and pump it to all the faucets until you DO NOT smell any bleach in the line. Top off the tank and you should be good to go. The amount of bleach for that big a tank should be around 1 cup. Quarter cup per 15 gallons is the general rule.
