Newbie question about towing weights

Hi

We're looking at 5ers and wondering how to figure pulling weights. Which numbers do you use to figure whether your truck is strong enough?

(I know it's a basic question, but I'm really scratching my head here.)

We own a 1998 F250 (Ford) V8 gasoline, with a heavy duty towing package that's in great shape. (I don't have the paperwork to tell me which liter it is; we bought it used so we don't have any manual or anything.)

A quick Google search says that an F250 will pull 2100 to 2600 lbs. Most 5ers that I'm looking at (such as a Wilderness 32 foot) are listed as weighing 7994 pounds. Does that mean that we can't pull it?

(IF so, seems odd because I pull a horse trailer that's rated at 10K lbs. just fine...)

Can someone give me some simple clarity on a formula, or how to find out what my truck really can pull?

  • Ok you have the big boy...

    1998 Ford F-250 HD Crew-Cab 4x4 7.5 V-8 10000
    Requires 4.10:1 axle ratio.
    Requires Trailer Towing Package.
    Requires weight-distributing hitch.
A higher tow rating is listed for pickups that tow fifth-wheel trailers.

No you have to weight the truck as I stated below... You may not have enough payload for heavier 5th wheel...

And post the other info asked... Tires and door tag axle ratings...

I think that your weight figures you quote are cargo not towing weights

This is the search I did for our truck:

    https://www.google.com/search?q=towing+capacity+F250+1998&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8

And this is where I got the weight of a trailer we're considering:

Please let me know if I'm pulling the wrong numbers for checking the towing capacity/weight of trailer ratio. :D TIA
  • you have the 5.4 v8 depending on type of f250 reg cab crew 2wd or 4x4 you get between 5800 and 9000 lbs cap

    4x4?
    2 dr?
    crew cab?
    HD or standard?

    Basically best case scenario is 10k lbs.(crew cab 7.5 v8 4:10 rear) Worst case is 6900 lbs(4.6 v8 3:73 rear)

With that said to find max pin weight you need to take your truck to a cat scale. Get the two axle weights front and rear. Fill the gas tank and load the truck with people and carg for camping..

Take those weights and take the axle ratings on the door tag and subtract the #'s.. This will give you available payload..

Also post the max air pressure from your tire side wall and the max weight the tires can carry at that psi.. ( All on the side wall.)

    We can guide you better..
