Just made transition from gasoline MH and dinghy to F250 TD & 5W, hoping that truck diesel lanes would simplify the problem of finding accessible pumps. Well, accessibility is easy, but even after a 2K roundtrip from TX to NC and back, I'm still in the dark about a few things.First off, the pump spout fits. And secondly, I have a FlyingJ card so I can pay at the pump. IF ONLY I could understand the interface: When I insert the card and enter my PIN, I get about 8 "choices" that are foreign to me. I don't recall all of them, but they include "tractor", "reefer", DEF, "choice" and some others, but none refer to the type of fuel. That, coupled with warnings about damage from fueling with the wrong product displayed on the pump kept spooking me, so I would inevitably take my card inside and do the "dance". I just said I wanted auto diesel and overestimated my charge slightly. The clerks were usually too busy to offer an explanation, and when they had the time, they didn't seem to know what I was seeing at the pump. A trucker in the next lane educated me as to the difference between the tractor and the reefer (which was the least of my questions), but otherwise not much help.My main question: can anyone here clarify these choices at the pump when paying by Flying J card?And my other question: are their multiple grades of diesel at truck lanes? Somebody said Diesel 1 or Diesel 2. What's the difference? What is comparable to the diesel served at the auto pumps.Thanks so much in advance for any assistance.

Tractor is regular diesel fuel.Reffer would be road tax free red diesel, that if you are caught with that in your tank, you will have the IRS all over you, and you do not want that! That red dye will stay in there through several fuel fill ups, and will take a while to get rid of, then change the fuel filters, ect, and you still might have some left. . .DEF is not what you want in the fuel tank. DEF is like cow pee, and is used to regenerate a catalytic system on modern diesel trucks. The others? Stop at "Tractor" and get diesel.Good luck,Happy trails!Fred.

We get our diesel at the rv pump island at Flying J. No pump menu to fret over. Put your cards in and pump. My CEO/Navigator goes in to the cashier and prepays to make things even easier. And yes she gets the discount.

The last few times I fueled up the Flying J RV Diesel lanes they capture 500.00 on my credit card that didn't clear for 72 hours when I only filled up with 60 to 80 bucks worth of fuel. I have a credit card I use traveling that only has 2500 credit limit and I do that for reason of being scammed. I get 5 tanks of fuel over couple days could max out that card when there was only couple hundred dollars of fuel pumped.The regular lines at the Flying J only capture 100.00....

I hate that they don't take cards at the pumps. That is just silly in today's world of computers.

Oh, I would also warn people that the big fat nozzles will splash all over the place when the tank is full on my GMC. The nozzle doesn't cut off fast enough when the tank is full. I have to slow way down when the tank is about full.

Do you push your nozzle in ALL the way?

It's been a while since I had to use a big nozzle, but they will not go all the way in. I just hold it while filling up, and it is still a lot faster than most smaller nozzles. Keep in mind they are designed for filling 100 gal. plus tanks. Also keep in mind that I am not the most experienced person on here!

Off topic, but most Hess stations use green for gas and orange for diesel. Hard to spot the diesel pumps when the station is busy.

Don't sweat DEF, it does not come thru the same pump handle as fuel. It is usually hidden behind an access panel beside the pump. Also if they ask about your company, as in trucking company, just say your private. Become a life member of Good Sam and get 8 cents off a gal of diesel cash price. I have never scene a diff in price at the RV island and the truck islands. I have been using the truck islands for 22 years.

I pulled into a BP station in Mich a few years back Used green pump handle. Only pumped about 3 gals when caughtt mistake. Additives added to fuel along with fill up of diesel prevented having to drain tank. I try to double check each time now. Also, have tried to avoid BP ever since. With green or yellow being pretty standard for diesel, it seems they would help people avoid this kind of mistake.

#1 in the winter, #2 in the summer,in the US, in Canada it's either winter grade or summer grade.

This is kind of off the subject. but I will tell on myself here. Every green pump handle I had ever seen before this happened was diesel. I'm from Oklahoma, but even in other states it was that way. Got in a hurry one time in Pa., pulled up to a green handle, filled up, went about a mile and guess what....I had filled up a Dodge diesel with premium unleaded. Didn't run too well on it. No permanent damage to the engine luckily. Anyway, sorry for the long story, but maybe it will save some one else from doing something like that! Always make sure you have the right fuel going in to your vehicle!:o
