Newbie request Info

Being this is my first post i would like to start off by saying Hello. I figured this would be the best place to acquire information or pushed in the right direction. I Start off by providing some info on what my needs are, i fly rc aircraft and jets and some are well sized 9ft lengths with 65'' widths. I presently use a 5x12 enclosed trailer and it has reached its usefulness due to its size. Being 55yrs old i like to be comfortable when i am enjoying my hobby and attending events. I am handy when it comes to modifying things and turning a wrench so thats not a deal breaker, but I am limited to a major draw back, the home i own has a limited side pathway of 7feet to the back yard with a few inches to spare but not to 8ft. The city doesn't allow trailers or rvs in the front of my homes and i wouldn't want it there anyway. I could buy another enclosed trailer just longer but i would like to camp out at the events and would like some home comforts like a shower/toilet ac kitchen and sleeping amenities. i have found one company (lite) that makes a 84in width but not in the 20 feet range with a drop down tail for the toys. I know some companies have enclosed trailers with some of the options but the price they charge i can spend less in a great condition home style rv trailer and modifying with a rear drop down ramp and still have enough for a trip. The work and play set ups are nice just to wide. If you have other ideas out there you can shoot my way would be great and thanks in advance.
  • Most all of the "RV" manufacturers are going to be at 102' or 96" I can't say I've seen any under 96". I think your best bet is going to look at cargo trailers that you can modify. Would you consider storing it in a storage lot instead of your house?
  • No Jac i do not have limitations in length. I currently have a 5x10 enclosed trailer which i disconnect from the truck then trailer dolly it thru the side of the house. I really would not like to have to go thru connecting two units. I have noticed that most units above 7x14ft trailers i have found have the wheels that protrude out. I am looking into the caravans now but it seems that England and the aussy"s have some nice ones.
  • Do you have length limitations in your storage area? What about a small lightweight truck camper (the kind that goes in the bed of your truck) and then the larger utility trailer? I don't know how this will affect the payload on your truck, but may be an option worth looking into.
  • Thanks Y-Guy look forward to the info., I did come across the camplite units that seem to be in the ball park with 7 feet in width on the travel trailer side but would have to move some things and install a ramp door, they do carry toy haulers but they don't list outside widths only inside but i will be placing a call to them. I did come across the real lite mini with a front deck but in that case i would have to build an aluminum box type to transport the aircraft to events. I trying to stay below the 20 ft range due to my pulling vehicle is a ram 1500 standard with the 5.7l hemi tow pack. thanks again.
  • I’m on the road right now and connection gives out. I believe we have a few members that share your hobby with toy haulers. You might hit up the search. I’ll try when I can but might be a few days.

That is an option but i was looking for something with less work. In my twenties i took a mail truck and converted it to a small rv to go to a major airshow so i know it is quite a bit of work. I have found rv trailers with the full set up I'm looking for in the 7 foot widths but the wheels and axels are outside exceeding the room i have. Does any one know how long i can go safely with a 7 foot width rv trailer
Modifying and Changing out a set of axels seems more viable then building from scratch..
It is more than just changing axels, you would need to build wheel wells into the trailer, which means major modifications to the interior which can include cabinets, electrical, plumbing.....whole can of worms. I think it would be easier getting and enclosed trailer and building it like you want.

  • You may want to look into building your own "stealth camper". Many have converted an enclosed trailer into a camper.
