Opinions: FW to gooseneck adapters?

What are your opinions for the gooseneck adapters for the FW hitches? Pro's/ con's? Considering purchasing one. Thanks!

  • Look into an Andersen ultimate hitch. It gives you the advantages of a gooseneck with none of the drawbacks that go along with the adapters. My rail mount version blows away any traditional fiver hitch I've ever used when it comes to ease of installation, use and smoothness going down the road. It works really well in rough terrain, too.
  • Many people use them, prefer them to a standard 5th hitch, and have no problems. But as mentioned, make sure it will not void your warranty if you have a new trailer. No doubt the stresses on the frame are different.

Lippert apparently does approve using the Goosebox adapter. But it has an air bag and shock absorber built in.
  • I have owned the goose neck hitch ever since I have had 5ers and I like it very much. With that said I have no idea how it would work on a large 5er. Like I said I have never owned a fifth wheel hitch so I can't say which one is easier or harder to hook up. I do know my gooseneck is a breeze. I have taken my 5ers to Alaska and Colorado over the Rockies into the Yukon. Over just about every extreme mountain pass in this country and a few in Canada as well I have had no problems with the gooseneck. My 5ers are rather small weighting only 9000,to 10,000lbs or so.

    Hope this helps.
  • If you're looking at one for a new 5th wheel be sure to check the warranty. Some companies will void the warranty if you use an adapter.

IMO it depends on the size and weight of the 5th wheel in question. You might get by fine with a smaller/lighter 5th wheel. Using one on a 38' 16,000 lb. 5th wheel wouldn't be a good idea, IMO.

My brother used one to haul his 31' 5th wheel and boat from Iowa to Minnesota every year and had no issues. Not a huge boat, and the small 5th wheel had no slides. YMMV.
  • Gooseneck trailer frame....large beams, heavy struts/bracing

    5th wheel trailer frame......horizontal beans, boxed structure/bracing

Just because something is available/offered via AFTER MARKET doesn't mean it works, is necessary or is an improvement........just a means f separating one from their monies
