Oregon ATV Safety Card

There are two aspects to reciprocity in Oregon.

* License or ATV stickers.
As of October 2014, Oregon honors permits from the following states:  Arizona, California, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Montana, Nevada, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, Utah and Washington

* ATV safety training.
Completing an ATV Safety Education Course in your home state or country and carrying proof of completion on your person when riding on lands open for public use. Which means if your state doesn't have a class you need to take Oregon's class (i.e. Washington State). The ATV Safety Institute (ASI) or a Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) courses no longer fulfill the safety training.

Reciprocal laws all depend on the person that stops you. Common sense like I'm plated in AZ but some areas in Orange County CA I may have problems those areas I wouldn't go through. It's your call, I've have always found it odd just because your plated in a a UTV and your not wearing a helmet may alert that unwanted stop by local law enforcement. I try to go where nobody goes and I don't have issues.

A lot of the Rangers and Sheriffs will look at your quads first for the offroad stickers, if you've got those and riding responsible many will leave you alone. Missing the offroad stickers on your bike/quad/UTV for Oregon or another state and they will get out of their trucks and ask for your OHV Safety card too. Some of them just ask everyone they meet on the sand, trails or forest service roads. I've been asked about once a year and we ride a lot.

I've seen huge groups get busted for load exhausts, no stickers, no Safety Cards and just end up going home.

I'm in the process of doing the same with my family. We will be riding Santiam Pass and the Dunes outside of Florence. My middle child is 5, and rides here in California on a TTR-50 with training wheels. She will not be riding in Oregon due to their cutoff age of 7. My oldest is 14 and is taking the online safety course, along with my wife and myself. I'm not worried about the 14yr old having passed an actual onsite class, which Oregon seems to require for anyone under 16.

Thank-you for the replies to my questions and the link to check out Oregon ATV requirements.

My understanding after reading those requirements is that a side by side ATV is a Class IV ATV. It states that any operator of a class IV ATV over 16 years of age is not required to have the safety card.

Did I read this correctly?

All the info about program is below. Keep in mind that Oregon did this and kept it FREE. One death is to many, I'm not fan of Government Regulations but I also have seen to many clueless/dangerous yahoo's on the trails and dunes. Watching one camping neighbor being Life Flighted only reinforced my feelings.
