There are good trailer tires available, they just do not start with ST in their size. Example Goodyear G614 LT235/85R16 LRG, for trailer with over 6K axles, and 215/75R17.5 LRH for trailer with over 7k axles. For 5200 and 6K axles there are lots of LT235/85R16E's and LT245/75R16E's, with the Michelin XPS Rib and Bridgestone Duravis R250 being two of the best, all steel ply tires.
High quality tires are expensive, so the manufacturers choose to stick people with el cheapo tires, that they buy by the truck or train car load pre-mounted on wheels from Tredit or Tireco for next to nothing.

Chris, the real problem is with those of us who have 15" rims. There's just only 1 15" tire that has a decent history, and that's Maxxis. The only other solution is to go to 16" rims and, for some, wheel well clearances can start to be an issue if you do...besides the extra expense.
