Questions: Andersen Ultimate Aluminum #3221 5th Wheel Hitch

The Andersen website says this unit is for use with:

1. Flatbed trucks

2. Trucks with a "recessed" gooseneck ball

Can this hitch be used on a '16 Ram 3500 that came from the factory with the OEM 5th wheel prep package (with the 4-point rail mounts and gooseneck)?

As much as I'd rather use the less expensive rail version of the Andersen Ultimate (steel instead of aluminum), it sits too high for my rig. The Andersen Ultimate Aluminum #3221 sits about 4" lower.

Thanks.
  • I have the steel Andersen 3200 which attaches to rails. I already had the Reese picture frame puck to rail adapter for my previous Reese 16K. The Andersen's lowest setting is about 2" higher than the Reese, so I did go from level to a little nose high, but not enough to hurt. I hooked up for the first time this weekend 3 times to move onto an Andersen Rapid Jack for suspension work and found it much easier to use than the old 16K. If I were starting from scratch, I would get the goose ball and Andersen 3220 gooseneck mount. The 2" height of the Reese puck to rail adapter put's it about 1.5" higher than bed rails.
  • I own the 3221 version for my flatbed truck with recessed ball. I think your question is a good one, so I took a look at mine. The ball coupler sleeve itself protrudes past the bottom plane of the hitch frame, so it definitely will not work. Due to the design and machining of the coupler sleeve, you can't cut it/modify it to work. I know that Andersen sells longer sleeves (I have one), but they perhaps may also sell shorter sleeves. I doubt they would have shorter ones, but it may be worth a phone call. Otherwise, the 3220 would be what you need.

I agree ,I would already have one.

    Agreed.
  • The king pin adapter is neutral to the king pin itself. Basically, the ball hole and kingpin protrusion are the same. Call or send an email to customerservice@anderseninc.com . You will get an answer and help from Jason.

Thanks, kinda figured it was a long shot.

I'm using a temporary 5th wheel hitch, which from a strictly height perspective, works really well. It measures ~14.75" from the bed of the truck to the top of the hitch assembly (where the trailer's king pin assembly rests). This measurement includes the Ram picture frame adapter height of ~1.75". The entire 5th wheel hitch itself is ~13" high.

Andersen list the height of the Ultimate hitches as "measured from bed of truck to top of ball mount".

I'm assuming this height measurement is from the bed of the truck to the top of the Ultimate hitch assembly itself without the ball inserted?

If this is the case, I'm assuming I need to add the thickness of the Ultimate Connection King Pin Coupler assembly to the advertised height to arrive at the equivalent height as my current 5th wheel hitch?

Which brings up the last question: how thick is the Ultimate Connection King Pin Coupler assembly?

    Thanks!
  • If Andersen were smart they would come up with a hitch that would drop right into the RAM factory puck system.
  • I have a Anderson hitch and Love it, If I were you I would call them and ask about the hitch. As for how high it sits in the bed, the ball as a lot of adjustment. I Think all have to have the ball in center of the bed to hook on to. I have called Anderson service people a few times, they were very good and helpful, Call them
