Ram MegaCab

I have a 2015 Ram MegaCab 3500 dually and I'm starting to look at toy haulers. My problem is I want to use the puck system for my hitch, which only leaves me with non slider options, or I use a picture frame to get a slider and probably end up with the trailer being nose high. My question is do any of you have a newer MegaCab pulling a 40+ ft toy hauler? Which direction did you go for your hitch, and would you change it if you could?

I think I would just get rid of the mega cab...wait, I wouldn't have ever bought one to begin with. Useless truck in my opinion...dually with no bed, special this and special that to be able to use it as a truck, but again, just my opinion.

i specifically purchased the truck with my family in mind first, which it does an excellent job giving the kids enough room in the back to not go crazy on long trips..... I knew there would be an issue when I wanted to switch over from a TT to a fifth wheel, but my sanity is worth the small hassle and cost of figuring out which hitch to get.

In the end we are talking about 18" which hardly makes a truck useless in the grand scheme of "doing truck stuff" and not just pulling a trailer.

I do have a megacab with the factory puck system. I bought through Pull rite the Ram rails. Those rails do allow me to install any ISR (industry standard rail) system. It does raise the 5th wheel about 3-4" higher. However I just have the 5th in the lowest level adjustable holes. I have about 6" of clearance between my bed rails and the bunkhouse of the trailer. It allow the trailer to sit nose low instead of nose high.

BTW, I think B&W does have a slider that uses the puck system. Had I known, I wouldn't have purchased the Pull rite ram rails.

While I love the Grand Design toy haulers we will probably end up with a Voltage 3970. I believe I also saw a Fuzion that had a similar floor plan with the L shaped couch as well so I'll have to take a look at that one too.
We have a Triton (Voltage) 2951. I believe all the Voltages (including the Triton) use the same front cap with the scalloped corners. TV is a '16 Ram 3500 short bed with the Ram OEM 5th wheel prep group.

We use a Ram picture frame adapter along with a regular, non-slider 5th wheel hitch. The only issue we had was finding a 5th wheel hitch that would adjust down to 13-14 inches (to get 6" of clearance and keep the TH almost level). Most only adjust down to 16-17".

Posted a pic with the left front cap about 6 inches away from the left side of the cab. Since the rear of the king pin assembly (which is easy to see from the driver's seat) would contact the side of the bed before the cab would contact the cap, we don't have to guess or get out of the truck to gauge the cap/cab distance.

So far, after a 1,000 miles of towing, we've had no issues using a non-slider hitch.

  • Just put the picture frame and Pullrite hitch in buddies Megacab. His Fusion sits a little high maybe about an inch. He says it pulls great with no problems.
  • It seems that most of the new trailers are designed to be towed by a short bed without a slider.

I would narrow my trailer choices first, then decide on a hitch.
  • Mine comes in just under 37ft and I pull it with a Ram 3500 Mega. My truck didn't come with the factory tow prep so I installed a B&W slider mounted on rails. The trailer sits level but I think I will need to actually raise the hitch height 1" and move the pin box up as well to operate the slide.

FWIW - on my Raptor I haven't yet been in a situation that I actually needed to slide the darn thing.
