replace 110 v outlet

I have noticed some of the plugs are a little lose fitting and plug doesn't say in tight. can I replace these outlets with standard outlets from lowes. also are the boxes the same, they definitely are not as deep
  • Hi,

There may be no box at all. I caused all but one of mine to be replaced. Fortunately it was possible to the upgrade.
  • There is probably no box so you should replace with the "sealed" type that is already there.

You should be able to open the receptacle and bend the contacts slightly to tighten it up.
  • The one I changed out had the wires all crimped to the outlet. I don't think they have any standard. I would just pull one out and check it out. Home Depot & Lowes have blind electrical boxes that can go into a finished wall.
  • The ones that are there now are probably the cheap insulation displacing type. It would be much better if you replace them with a shallow cut in box and a high quality outlet. Not a bad job to do yourself if you are comfortable working on electrical. Just be sure to turn off the power first. ;)
  • thanks everyone. they do seem cheap, I will replace.
    power turned off. :)
  • You touched on something I always look for when replacing outlets. Not sure how your's is wired but my wiring in the older MH is all stranded not solid which means all the outlet connections have crimp connectors on them and I do the same when replacing.
  • I haven't had a problem with the current 5er but the last had those 'Micky Mouse' crimp on outlets. The replacements I used were an old work shallow box and a Leviton Decora outlet that looked very much like the originals and available at almost any big box or hardware store. I did have to enlarge the openings but the usual paneling used by OEMs was easy to trim a bit.
  • The newer RVs have these goofy things - no box - just a hole. the wires lay across the spades on the outlet, then you put the back on and squeeze it or screw it together and they cut into the insulation like telecom stuff.
