This is pretty much what I think... try a few things first. Waste piping has virtually no pressure so sealing it is pretty easy. I had a leak in an ABS tub/shower drain years ago up in an impossible place to get new pipes in. I could just barely get my hand up there with a jar of ABS cement. I just gooped up the crack every time I walked by for a week and it's held for 10+ years. If nothing else you should be able to seal it up to buy some time and fix it when convenient.
