RV dealers parts ripoff

Not seeing the rip off but do see a potential issue. The gear he is going to get may work for a few slides but it is not going to be the same and not last. His few hours labour will leave him stick at a campground if it makes it that far.

Dealer should have warned of this but very possible an attitude was struck at the counter and they forgot to give this advice. Maybe did not even have the time lol.

Anyway good luck. I could be wrong but have a guy next to me who just read this, his 10 year old citation went through the same thing.

Well said. Sometimes I get up and read a bit here and think, man, who peed in your cornflakes?

Reminds me of a time years ago when I could not understand the rates that mechanics charge for car repairs (it was about $75/hour then)/ I thought it was a rip off.............. A good friend open a car repair business and we had the hourly rate conversation, so he should me his overhead.


Rent on premises
Car hoist lease payments
Tool lease payments
Town permits
Taxes (at all levels)
Payroll
Inventory costs
EPA costs
Disposal fees
Sundry costs
etc, etc, etc, etc

He then showed what $$$ comes in and what $$$ goes out. Even at $75/hour, not much stays in the business........

Give the guy a break? Maybe people here are tired of the whiners with no reason to gripe.

Yes I am aware that the dealer probably could have ordered the part for you if he wanted to but he chose not to, just as you chose not to buy a complete assembly that you didn't need.....still no ripoff.....get it? :)

It costs money to carry an inventory. You can't blame a retailer for identifying the parts most likely to sell and then stocking those with the highest margin. With analytics today, it is quite easy to do that using statistical methods based on historical parts sales. Also, don't discount that the manufacturer has set a high wholesale price to the dealer to offset a lower RV price-- much like HP will sell you a printer at cost + 5% and then hope to make it up with a much higher margin on the ink ($35 per cartridge). Here, the manufacturer might be able to used a standardized, commodity part, but if they design and use a proprietary part, they can charge much more for it. To make a fully informed RV purchase, one really does need to look at the aftermarket for parts and service. For example, I love my Winnebago on the MB Sprinter chassis, but when engine works needs to be done, compared to the Ford gasoline engines, I am going to be in a world of hurt.

Do you know that or are guessing? Lippert will only sell a motor assy, no parts. Tried that once. And while $550 is high for the assy the cheapest I found was around $400.

Hopefully your replacement gear is the correct one.

If you did buy it and it was guaranteed for a year and it dies in less than a year and he refuse to replace it that's a rip off. If he gladly replaced it then he did you right.

I gasp at the prices at local businesses too but I have to believe they are also paying a lot in taxes and other overhead. When I gasp it's not actually gasping at the price of an rv part or a bag of apples or oranges, it's gasping at the printing of dollars that dilute the value of all the other dollars in the pool.

Just because you or I are able to do it ourselves doesn't mean everyone or even most people can do it. Most people CANT do it. Then you have the people who have no business touching those parts walk back in with a greasy new gear and want to return because they goofed the whole thing up. They would come way complaining that hes a rip off because he wouldn't return it and all he would have got is bad mouthing and a little profit off $35.00 I can see it more his way. Did you ever have a paper route or mow lawns as a kid?
