Rv stop suggestion North of LA

Hi all,

I am going to the Nascar race March 23 in Fontana (Auto club speedway) with our fifth wheel and need a suggestion on where to stop after the race. Our goal would be to leave Sunday after the race late afternoon or early evening and get North of LA so we don't have to deal with as much traffic Monday morning. We are traveling up the coast highway to get back home (Vancouver B.C.). Any ideas? We hopefully wouldn't have to drive many hours but something along the coast that gets us out of some of the busiest areas would be the goal.
Thanks

You are in Fontana, leaving late afternoon or early evening *after* the race.
You want to go up the coast - which means 101.
You want to get out of Dodge (LA area) and be North of same on Sunday, before getting caught in Monday morning traffic in and through the LA area.
    Excellent plan!.;)

"Executing" that plan - will take about a 2 hour drive to anything within reason.

    What's within reason?
IMO - places SOUTH of Santa Barbara.
No Buellton, no Pismo Beach, for sure no Morro Bay.

OK - so what does that leave? - Ventura County parks along 101, or the option Jeff suggested (IMO, too far out of the way) - or:

    From Fontana - Freeways:
The 210 to the 118 (Simi "Ronald Reagan" Fwy).
118 to Oak Park -hookups- in Simi Valley. Right off the 118.
Departure (to connect to the 101) is via the 118 to the 23 (Moorpark Fwy) - which connects to the 101 at thousand Oaks.
(Better 101 "connectors" compared to the 126).
    Google: Oak Park Simi Valley

Alternate - for Rincon and the Ventura parks along 101:
210 to the 134 (Ventura Fwy) which turns into 101 once you're out of
    the San Fernando Valley.
"Straight shot" to those parks....however -

Good = it's Sunday hopefully open spots. Weekenders have gone home.
Right next to the 101 and steps to the Ocean..:C

Bad = Rincon and others are "101" close - handy for "everyone".
Also right next to the *train tracks*..:(
Expect to experience what seems like Amtrak coming thru your camp site at 2 or 3AM.
Sites (Rincon) are short. You may have to unhitch to fit your TV and trlr into a site. No hookups.

If you use the second option - and can't find a spot, Buellton and Flying Flags (N. of Santa Barbara) will have room - but it's about another hour+ drive.

Ventura - "Beach Front Parks" (101)

  • When you say "up the coast"...I'm assuming you're talking about the 101..surely not the 1.

I think Jeff has given you the best answer.

Since you are coming from Fontana, I would first take the 210 West until it merges with the I-5 North, then head up about 10 miles until you hit the 126.

From here you have several options.. At the junction of I-5 and the 126 is Travel Village. Nice park with several hundred spaces....

The next big park is probably 50-60 miles up in Buellton in Pea Soup land. >>>>>Flying Flags RV Resort this would be my 3rd choice.

PS- NEVER depend on Rincon having space at any time of the year. If the weather is even close to nice in the city, you can be sure that the beach area could easily be full. Trusted me... I'm and expert

    >>>>>> Rincon is hit and miss....Sunday is a good day to get a spot around noon time after the weekend folks leave. By late afternoon spaces get taken up by folks stopping for overnight. What we do is to get off of HWY 101 and cruise by Rincon to see if there are any spaces and then head on up to Flying Flags in Buelton if Rincon is full.

From here you have several options.. At the junction of I-5 and the 126 is Travel Village. Nice park with several hundred spaces. There are pull throughs for overnighters as well. There is almost zero traffic heading into Ventura on the 126 in the morning as your now literally 1/2 mile past any LA traffic (it's all on the 5). If you decide to drive another roughly 40 miles you can stop at Ventura Beach Resort. Nice park, but really noisy. Unless you already have reservations, the beach can really be a problem, and besides, this is an overnight stop. There are a few places in Santa Barbara, but all pretty expensive. The next big park is probably 50-60 miles up in Buellton in Pea Soup land.

  • Pismo Coast Village in Pismo Beach is a nice place to stay. It's about 30 minutes south of Morro Bay which is also a great place!

  • Race is Sunday so I would recommend Ventura area Parks near Ventura If you don't need hookups you could overnight along Rincon. It will be dusk by the time you arrive here; Morro Bay is another 2 hours north.
  • If you book right now at reserveamerica.com you may find some spaces at Morro Bay State Park, which is on the coast (101) highway and is about 260-miles north of Fontana and well north of L.A. It is located just northwest of San Luis Obispo. They have some sites with full-hookups but most are dry camping, regardless, they do have a dump station. 260-miles is about a 5-hour drive. Most of the coastal State Parks in California are booked solid for March 2014, it's best to make reservations 6-months in advance, but you may be able to find some spaces available at Morro Bay State Park.
  • Any of the state parks from Ventura on North. Depends on how far you want to drive. You will not make any time once you are on hwy 1
