This is only partially correct. It can be achieved but you must have a compatible data plan, not all DP's allow tethering.
I don't have a "compatible data plan," I use EasyTether. It does not use the smart phone's tethering capability, for which Verizon charges a monthly fee.
Nope not true! A couple of years ago Verizon was forced to drop that idea. You phone can be used as a wifi hotspot with no additional charges if your on one of their current rate plans.
Using Foxfi or any one of the other hotspot apps only fools your cell carrier. You still pay for data useage based on your carriers rate structure and your plan. There seems to be a ton of misinformation being posted on this thread. To get the whole story, go talk to your carrier.
Data is data. You will be paying for data no matter how you access it. Mifi's only advantage is you are able to use your phone and wifi at the same time. Unless your in business and need that capability, its a waste of money.
Agree with you here; a lot of misinformation. I can use my phone as a hotspot and we also have a MiFi. Most campgrounds that offer WiFi, as you stated, is normally "sadly lacking" when it comes to using one's computer, phone, tablet, etc.
We now spend the majority of our time at our camp in WV, in the middle of nowhere and with Verizon we have phone service and internet, all at 4G...so we're happy with what we have. - donn0128Explorer II

You cannot depend on free wifi at campgrounds because in many campgrounds it is very poor or non existent. I will make a generalization and state that I think most who want dependable wifi use one of the major phone carriers and either use a hotspot on a smart phone or a separate mifi device. It you want to stream, etc., it will be very expensive. 4G service really uses loads of data even when you are just doing basic surfing.
- NC_HaulerExplorerUnlimited data has to cost a " pretty penny", sounds like the plan would be expensive. We have 6 gig data plan, and in a month, we don't go over, but we don't watch video's or stream movies, etc... That's why we have HiDef satellite on roof of our TH. Verizon is the best carrier in the areas that we've camped for years

My wife and I have Verizon, what does "unlimited WiFi" cost you? Foxfi is a free app and you get free WiFi with it? Why would you need Verizon unlimited WiFi if you get it free through FoxFi?... Just curious, We have 6 gig data with unlimited talk and text for $140 a month...Verizon has been the only carrier we've had that gave us cellphone service and Internet at our camp in WV...service has been great with Verizon
The first post wasn't very clear, which led to some confusion....
FoxFi is an app, which allows your Verizon smartphone to "share the 4g data as wifi to other devices"
FoxFi is not the "data provider", data (4g) is still provided by Verizon.
If you want to tether directly through Verizon, Verizon requires you to pay an additional fee. I forget what the add-on service is called. You can avoid this extra Verizon fee by using FoxFi app.
The only thing I can't stand about FoxFi is that it installs a security certificate, and then forces you to enable a screen lock code, either a swipe pattern or a PIN.- NC_HaulerExplorerMy wife and I have Verizon, what does "unlimited WiFi" cost you? - azdryheatExplorerI use my Verizon Smartphone, with unlimited WIFI, as a hotspot but instead of going through Verizon I use an app called FOXFI, which is free. In fact we're camping and I am using it now.

Is the Verizon 4G one of those Mifi units
Yes. You can also use any verizon smart phone to use as a hot spot for up to 5 devices. I dropped my jet pack after it came off contract. Using my smart phone was just as good and saved 20 dollars a month
