Self Levelers

I have been told that if you do a lot of beach/shore camping that the pistons will get a film of sand dust sticking to the hydraulic fluid on them thus causing seal leaks. Anyone have this happen?

  • My owner's manual recommends using spray silicone to wipe down the exposed shaft periodically to clean and protect.
  • When all else fails read and understand the manufactures instructions. That is where the true no bs answer is.
  • Thanks for the chuckle NHI :)

There's an expert around every corner and in Washington - many without ANY experience, just bravado !
  • No. Another person talking about something they don't know anything about.
  • My farm tractor has hydraulics, which is similar. I use it in salt and snow, in dust and mud and rain, and the rams are fine. The tractor is now 26 years old. I change the hydraulic fluid every year and believe that is key to good performance. Water in the fluid is probably worse then water on the ram surfaces. Does your leveling system call for fluid changes?
  • Seems to me any hydraulic piston should be wiped down periodically to keep it functioning properly.
