Shopping for first RV...need guidance

My wife and I are going shopping for our first RV. We are going to large camper retailers this weekend just so we can get an idea of what is available. Here is what we know:

- We are pretty sure we want a 5th wheel

- We would like to be able to get a trailer that will sleep at least 6 that is safe to tow behind our 2014 F250

Questions:
- Is one construction type significantly better than the other (Wood vs Alum)?

- Are the brands that are better than others or brands we should try to stay away from?

- Will the price of a trailer change based on where you buy it? We live in the Northern Virginia are where everything is more expensive...would it be cheaper if I drove say to Louisiana and bought the trailer?

- I am all about ease of use when it comes to something like this. Don't want it to be too much work because then it reduces the fun and desire. Thinking of this...are there features I should be considering? As an example...auto-leveling jacks.

I am sure there are a billion other things we are not thinking of so any useful guidance is appreciated.

  • We if your looking at 5th wheels remember that the pin weight is 20% - 25% of trailer weight. Dry weight is not worth much. Mine was 10,500# dry but after we made it ours and did a couple of upgrades and loaded our stuff it's around 12,000# (gross is 14,000# ball park) so a 12,000# 5erwill have about a 2,400# pin weight. If you look inside your drivers door is a sticker with the GVWR on it. If you weigh you truck with you and the family, full of fuel and the gear you normally take you'll know your actual weight (add 300# for a hitch if not installed). GVWR is probably around 10,000# and you'll probably weigh around 7,500# so that would be about 2,500# to carry the pin weight. That's a 12,000# loaded trailer. You'll run out of capacity to carry the pin before you'll run out of pulling power.

As for construction both have there advantages and places like RV Wholesalers can save you some money. As for brands it depends upon your budget.

Looking hard at auto level 6 point on my next RV.
