slide topper slack

I have two slides on our 5er both with a topper. the small bed room topper is fairly tight and the rain runs off pretty good. Not so with the big side, it sags and water pools. My question is, is there an adjustment to tighten the slack to remove the sag? If so is it difficult? I don't want to make it worse. I'm thinking it is spring loaded and a wrong move and you'll have the whole thing unravel(sp?) Remember the old window shade when you tried to tighten it and you would hear a whirl and you lost the whole thing? thanks

Update to my previous post. While on my most recent trip, lots of rain, so this got me checking. Then i decided to look on the internet at other units for sale and see where and how the toppers are installed. GUESS WHAT? yep the toppers are installed too high on my unit. I sent pictures to the factory, they stated that the toppers are installed too high. the remedy is to re-install the toppers an inch and a half lower than they are, this of course creating holes to be filled or patched. The manufacture state that the replacing the T molding at the top of the slide will be the simplest fix. So now after emails to the dealer that did the installation, I wait. I am sure with all the documentation, we will have it done right. We will up date as soon as i know more or project complete. Staying diligent, documentation and continuous persistence will surely, hopefully get r done! ! ! Good Luck & Be Safe ! ! !

I for one would like to see some before and after pics.

  • Well just back from the dealer that is doing the warranty repair stuff and dealing with the slide toppers. Low and behold, the slide toppers apparently have two different style roller arms. the ones that are on it are taller and create the topper roller to be equal or above the connection point at the side of the coach. they, the factory is sending new arms, a bit shorter and apparently stick out differently as to keep the roller down further than the other so it maintains a positive drainage of water form the side of the coach. we will see how it ends up and works out, i will update as i can. Good Luck & Be Safe ! ! !
  • having the same issue with ours. We have challenged the dealer, who installed them to make contact with the manufacture and check the type of topper to insure they are the right ones. they say they are but the problem is that the installation is that the topper when extended makes the most outer edge higher than the edge next to the coach. This created the water to puddle in the center of the topper. I am challenging them to re install them a bit lower so the water sheds. My other trailer had positive drainage at all times. I have a concern with snow, and rain that ends up freezing on them. So hopefully within the next week, we will see what an outcome can be! Good Luck & Be Safe ! ! !
  • we also get some puddling when it rains a good amount,, we just run the slide in about half way and the water just runs off, then extend it back out... takes 2 min.
  • Very rarely will tightening the spring remove enough sag to prevent the water from pooling on long slide toppers. The fabric gets a little saggy. Even replacing the fabric only solves the problem for a few months. I would just learn to live with it or stick something like a beach ball or PVC support to hold up the fabric will stationary. The simple way to see if tightening the spring will help is to get up on a ladder and use your hands to twist the roller tube pretending to tighten the fabric. Usually, the fabric will be tight in one spot but saggy elsewhere. Tightening the spring will not help the saggy spots.
  • If you adjust the topper to make it tight enough in the places it sags, you risk tearing the material where it isn't sagging now. Do you have any pitch to your toppers? Very few do so if yours is one of the level ones, you are going to get water pooling on top if you get a fair amount of rain.
