Slider hitch necessity?

My truck is not a long bed and wondered if I should sale my 20k Reese hitch and get a slider?

  • I have a short bed, non slider and a standard front end 5er. Never needed a slider. When you are backing, you will get to an angle where you are just pivoting the trailer. This will happen well before 90 degrees. Go into a parking lot and see what it takes to get your cab in danger of touching the trailer... I think you'll be surprised at how far you can go, and how much you'll never need to get the rig to 90 degrees.
  • I have a short bed and old style flat front 8.6 ft wide fw so I use a pullrite 18,000. If you have a long pin box and rounded fw corners you may be fine. As they said pinch it and watch closely.
  • I put a small dent in the last truck I had from our f'ver right here at home backing in the drive. Since then I slide the hitch back whenever I backup. Just cheap insurance is what we figure. It only takes once hundreds of miles from home with a broken back glass to ruin a vacation.
  • I have an 08 Cardinal with the mostly flat front. I tow with a short bed Ford and I use the slider hitch often. I damaged the cab of my previous Dodge truck so I am very cautious now. It only takes one time to cause a lot of damage. I have a manual Reese 16K slider. It is easy to slide it back as long as rig is on near level ground.

Looks like I was looking at Parrothead Mike's trailer.

Try it and watch the corners of the cab. Does your pin box extend out past the front of your trailer?
I think it does a little.

Since you already have a hitch try it and see how tight you can turn without hitting the cab. I think you will be OK with the 2015 Cedar Creek Silverback because the pin box sticks out from the front of the trailer.
    I don't have a 2015 cedar Creek but a 06 grand junction.

  • I've got the B&W Companion slider. I haven't used the slide function yet, but I've been close. I'd rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it.
  • My experienced says you don't need one, but I've seen photos of folks that do need them. I've had my hitch since '03 with my '02 short bed. I've had 2 5th wheels during that time and the slider feature has never been used or needed.
